A fair entry of 15 prime cattle and 2 prime bulls were on offer for the Summer Show & Sale, which was kindly sponsored by Graeme Walker Building Services, and ably judges by Mr G Moor. The Champion was a Charolais heifer sold by T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke peaking at 220p and purchased by the judge

Longtown cattle ring

Barron cows: Philip’s Champion sells at 166p.

The companies second Summer Show & Sale saw an excellent entry of 41 cast cows and 1 cast bull on offer to a packed ring of buyers. Trade was on fire throughout the sale with numbers totally inadequate for the demand at ringside. Prior to the sale, the show was kindly sponsored by Graeme Walker Building Services and expertly judges by Granville Moor who awarded the following:

Beef Cow:

Dairy Cow:

1st – Dick Wigham – British Friesian

2nd – Stewart Armstrong & family – Holstein Friesian

Overall Champion: Wanwood Partners.

The sale commenced with a hillbred Saler x which sold to 127p from Henry Scott & Son, and this set the tone of the sale. Trade was on fire for everything from good to bad. Philip Walton’s champion created huge interest selling to 166p. Hill British Blue x sold to 129p from Wanwood Partners. Native types sold to 120p from Paul Whitfield and Hereford x from James Butler realised 127p. Dick Wigham sold a traditional British Friesian for 150p and long distant seller Willie Skilling sold teenager Highland cows between 44-62p. Wanwood Hill sold continentals to £1,170.30 with Cacrabank selling others to £939.80 and Cowden to £928.80 Native breeds sold to £900 from Hethermill. The aged Luing stock bull sold to 104p (£951.60) from Tom & Ross Wilson, Geltsdale.

Prime lambs were a smaller show of 2,926. Trade was very much on par with other centers this week to average a respectable 173p overall. Good meated lambs of any weights met a strong demand. Top price per head of £101 for Texels from Kirk House, with top price per kilo of 219p for Texels from Wallend. Light lambs met a much stronger enquiry for again good meat with top price per head was £65 for Suffolks from Fenwick and top price per kilo of 191p for Cheviots from Harwood.

Longtown sheep ring

Another very large entry of 5,761 cast ewes and rams attracted more buyers. Trade was buoyant with all classes very good to sell at similar high rates on the week. The sale topped at £140 for a Charollais ram from Beckfoot. Heavy ewes to £138 for Texels from Bowsden Moor and hill ewes to £73 for Lleyns from Mitchelston.
