Breed Record Equalled at Jacob Highlight
The breed record of 2,600gns (£2,730) was equalled by the supreme champion at the Northern Area Jacob Sheep Breeders’ 41st annual show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Sept 3)
The champion came from Tony Reilly’s Deerpark Flock in Tranent, East Lothian, and was offered for sale on his behalf by Robert Locker, of Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders.
The title winner, the first prize ewe lamb and female champion, was bred in Wales by Siwan and Wyn Harries, who run the Hope pedigree flock in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire. The daughter of Hyndshaw Highland Laddie, bought when champion at St Boswells, fell to the show judge Gordon Connor, of Messrs Connor & Dalrymple’s Dun Mor flock in West Lothian.
A strong trade for both females and rams saw four sheep change hands for 1,000gns or more. Second top price of 1,200gns fell to the second prize ewe lamb from North Yorkshire’s Stephen Dodsworth, of the Overdale flock in Helmsley. The January-born 4-horn by the home-bred ram, Overdale Robert Price, became another acquisition by the judge.
Mr Dodsworth was also responsible for the first prize shearling ram, male champion and reserve overall champion, Overdale Takan, a January, 2015, 4-horn also by Overdale Robert Price, who has just been sold to the Price family’s Pentrenant flock in Churchstoke, Powys. The runner-up sold for 580gns, top price in class, to RE Blacknell, from Stafford.
Jean Price was again to the fore when achieving 1,100gns with her first prize ram lamb and reserve male champion, the February-born 4-horn, Pentrenant Louis, by Hope Flash Lad, reserve champion at both the Royal Three Counties and Royal Welsh Shows.
It was bought jointly by Skipton’s Gavin and Becky Haworth, and exhibitor Robert Locker, who together run the Blackadder Jacob flock, established five years ago. Mr and Mrs Haworth also also have their own local Hurrsdale flock, while Mr Locker also runs his own standalone Edingale flock.
Mrs Price’s husband Robert, who runs his own Pentre flock, wasn’t far behind on 1,000gns with his first prize shearling ewe and reserve female champion, a January, 2015, 2-horn acquired from Jerry Strong and Lorna Hendey’s Elmley flock in Worcestershire. This Nutwood Warrior daughter sold to RM Burnley, of Mirfield.
Red Rose breeder Howard Walsh, who runs the Thornley flock in the village of the same name, near Longridge, also caught the eye with a 900gns ram lamb sold to Lurg Farm in Glasgow, while Robert Price made 820gns with a ewe lamb, also bought by Mr Burnley, who made a further 800gns buy in the second prize shearling ewe from the Pike Field flock of K Gaskell in Horwich, near Bolton. Jean Price also sold a gimmer lamb at 750gns, again to the Haworth & Locker partnership.
Aged rams sold to 260gns for the second in class from J Atkinson, of the Northlands flock in Thirsk.
