OTM’s: Oliver’s hairy hill cow tops sale

An entry just short of 30 head was offered to the usual full company of buyers with several feeding orders at ringside. The entry was of a varied quality with hill bred cows again a large percentage of the entry, trade was sharper on the week. Oliver Douglas topped the sale at 118p for a black Limousin, Angus x cows sold to 109p from Martin Watson. Paul and Stuart Whitfield sold a tremendous wagon load of native cows with Salers to 108p and with Galloways to 104p. Dairy cows topped at 100p for a British Friesian from Malcolm Dodd. Holstein Friesians topped at 90p from David Irving. Top price per head was £773.90 from Rotherhope with Black & Whites to £770 from Roanstree.

Longtown cattle ring

Clean cattle: an extremely mixed entry saw a fine Charolais bull top the section at 175p. A wild Limousin heifer, half meat sold at 173p. Trade of the day was for a Black & White heifer from The Stubb, which sold to 142p.

Farmers, more numbers are needed on a regular basis to supply demand. Remember “Sell Live and Thrive”.

A larger show of 4,118 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Best quality lambs remain very dear and short of requirements, with export lambs dearer on the week as more heavy lambs come onto the market. 50kg+ lambs were dearer realising between £85-90, but 45-50kg lambs were a mixed trade especially if too fat. Care should be taken that lambs are not drawn too lean even though they weigh heavy. Lightweight lamb’s sharper on the week and short of requirements. Sale topped at 245p for Beltex from Crawthat, and £110 for Beltex from Bridgestone. Sale averaged 166.3p (SQQ 170.8ppk)

A similar show 5,240 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers, with trade sharper on the week for all classes. Good heavy ewes short of buyer requirements and realising extreme rates. Rams remain similar. Hill ewe’s sharper especially if not too fat. Sale topped at £147 and £144 for Texel ewes from Dearham Hall. Texel rams topped at £146 from Clerk Hill.
