Pickles White Wyandottes Champions at Skipton
The Pickles family from Lothersdale again ruled the roost at the Christmas Craven Feather Auctions show and sale of poultry and waterfowl at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Dec 10)
Father and daughter Richard and Becky Pickles, of Bent Laithe Farm Cottage, who had landed both the championship and reserve championship with their White Wyandottes at the previous poultry show in September, repeated the feat again at the latest renewal with a pair of 2016 White Wyandotte point of lay pullets, which sold for £60.
Mr Pickles, a multiple past Craven Feather Auctions champion and regular prize winner, works as a motor mechanic for Peter Watson in Skipton, while his 15-year-old daughter, a pupil at South Craven School, Cross Hills, is planning to go to college to study agriculture.
Becky is a member of Lothersdale Young Farmers Club and has won the club’s ‘Stockman of the Year’ title – a competition based on judging abilities - for the past four years.
Reserve champion was the first prize pen of waterfowl, a trio of 2016 Trout Indian Runner ducks from L Brittain, of Newton-le-Willows, which sold for £32.
The day’s joint top prices of £80 fell to a trio of 2015 Large White Wyandottes from K Jowett, of Thornton, Bradford, and a trio of 2016 Rhode Island Red pullets from AT Denham, of Norland, Halifax, who also sold a second trio at £75.
Co-judges were Kirklees poultry breeder Mark Rangeley, from Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, and Richard Boothman, from Doncaster.
