Galloways in Demand at Carlisle

At Harrison and Hetherington’s multi breed sale held at their mart in Carlisle, Galloways were sought after and proved they were the only breed in demand, with only one animal unsold.

A quality show was on offer to purchasers who journeyed from England, Scotland and Ireland, with new and returning customers taking 11 head over the Irish sea.

The judge, James Kyle, Spout Bank, Walton, Brampton awarded the female championship to Barlaes Katie 83rd from Robert McTurk, Barlaes, Dalry, Castle Douglas Katie was the same way bred as last year’s champion, with the sire being the home bred Barlaes Magic and out of Barlaes Kate 59th, making a telephone bid of 1500gns to secure her was Brendan Douglas, 15 Ganvaughan Road, Castle Derg, Co Donegal, Ireland. Brendan Douglas also took Robert’s other two heifers home – Barlaes Brownie 244th a Barlaes Jackanory daughter and out of Barlaes Brownie 197th, this May 2017 born heifer sold for 1550gns and another Jackanory daughter Barlaes Nancy 170th, this 21 month old heifer is out of Nancy 122nd and sold for 1280gns.

The top price of the day was an incalf heifer - Nancy 716 of Whitehill from regular consigner Walter J Henderson, Whitehill, Lockerbie, this April, 2016 born heifer is by the home bred sire Neilman of Whitehill and out of Nancy 716 of Whitehill she sold incalf to Titan of Whitehill for 2000gns to Kilnstown Farms Ltd, Kilnstown, Bewcastle, Carlisle. The Whitehill team also sold Lizzie 707 of Whitehill, another Neilman of Whitehill daughter for 1150gns to Keith Laurie, Southdean Farm, Chester.

The reserve champion was Miss Ulrica of Balgray from husband and wife team David and Rosemarie Cornthwaite, Balgray, Lockeribe, this 34 month old heifer is incalf to Noir of Balgray and is by the 9200gns Troloss Impecable purchased in partnership with Kirkstead she sold to Messrs Evans, Dale Cottage Farm, Wessington, Derbyshire for 1700gns.

Gordon and Kathleen Gilligan, High Creoch, Gatehouse of Fleet had a good day at the office as they sold Unity 40th of High Creoch for 1300gns, this June 2017 born heifer by Matt of High Creoch went home with WD & R Elliot, Burnfoot, Ewes, Langholm. The husband and wife team then sold Sonsy Lass 6th of High Creoch for 1250gns, this time by Legend of High Creoch, this 26 month old sold to M/s Evans, Dale Cottage Farm, Wessington.

Walter Henderson, Whitehill, Lockerbie, also secured the championship awards in the male section winning the champion and reserve champion rosettes, the champion was Alfredo of Whitehill this 21 month old is a Neilman of Whitehill son and out of Lizzie 401 of Whitehill he sold to new customer Mr M McElwaine, Uppercorky, Letterkenny, co Donegal for 750gns. The reserve champion was Gerrard of Whitehill, this April 2017 born Everest of Gall-way son is off home with the Waugh Family, Kilnstown, Bewcastle for 800gns. The top price bull Beanley Horatio from Hedgeley Farms, Headgeley Hall, Powburn, Alnwick is a Blackcraig Turbo son and out of Beanley Beauty 4th, this April 2017 sold to Mr JM Davidson, East Deloraine, Selkirk for 1800gns.
