Glorious Glendale Show Shines Again!
Glendale Show Showcases the best of the countryside under a record-breaking blanket of sunshine, especially so for the Allen Family of Humbleheugh and Stouphill.
The 127th Glendale Show on Bank Holiday Monday was a celebration of the wonders of the North Northumberland countryside for all the family. The sun shone down over the showground as over of 12,000 visitors descended on Wooler to enjoy a taste of rural life, as well as seeing some of the finest livestock, ponies and horses that the region has to offer. Across the showfield there was an abundance of attractions, exhibitions and local producers.
Champion of Champions Clive Storey
With a total of 96 cattle and sheep classes, this year, saw record entries received for the cattle section. In the sheep section, Ian Murray of East Wrangham Farm, was awarded overall interbreed Champion for his Texel Shearling with reserve going to Alan Cowans of Philiphaugh Estate.
In the cattle section The Lilburn Estates Farming Partnership Perpetual Challenge Trophy was awarded to the Allen Family of Humbleheugh and Stouphill for their Aberdeen Angus Heifer Carlhurlie Quorum with May-born calf sired by Rawburn Estonian. Reserve Champion was awarded to J Craggs of Sedgefield for his commercial heifer.
Commenting afterwards Cattle judge, Miss L Allan
said:
“The winner was an outstanding animal, which stood out in the ring.
Feeding her calf well, she was an absolute diva, correct and stylish. I
have had a great day and would like to highly commend all of the exhibitors and
stewards.”
Commenting
Dallas Allen said:
“Today has been tremendous, we have been showing at Glendale
for a few years now and this heifer was reserve here at Glendale three years
ago and to scoop Champion today is a massive honour and of course what a
tremendous trophy to win.”
Hotly contested, the overall winner of the Best Field of Livestock Competition, sponsored by Ian Watson of Performance Feeds and the recipient of the Ted Fox Family Trophy was the Allen Family of Humbleheugh for their field of Purebred Aberdeen Angus.
Sponsored by Harrison and Hetherington and judged by Mr Ronald Wilson, the Champion of Champions Award, which saw the tough task of judging the best overall animal on the showfield between the Horse, Cow, and Sheep, was awarded to Clive Storey for his Hunter with another acknowledgement for the Allen family , who received the overall Champion of Champion’s reserve award for their pedigree Angus Heifer with calf at foot.
The Young Handlers went to Ralph Naylor who was awarded the Campbell’s Perpetual Challenge Trophy, second was Henry Mair-Chapman and third went to Ewan Hamish.
Carrs Billington Point Competition went to Lilburn Estates Farming Partnership with joint second going to Mr J R Whitecross of Clarabad Mill, Paxton and Mr Jimmy Elliot of Branton Eastside.
Giving
feedback on the day, Chief Livestock Steward, Ian Murray who scooped the
overall Sheep Champion said:
“The show of livestock was tremendous with very high-quality
stock across all classes and the largest line up of cattle ever seen here. I really would especially like to thank those
who brought their sheep and cattle to Glendale Show, and those who gave up valuable
harvesting time to do so. I would also like
to thank to our judges, which without their support, this section of the show
quite literally would not happen.
“On a personal note I was of course delighted to be awarded the overall Sheep Champion for my Shearing Texel Ram, which will have his next outing at Kelso Tup Sales.”
In the Goat section there were a range of goat breeds competing with Best in Show going to Miss R Campbell’s Linnavon Edelweiss and reserve Mr P Mounter with Montrue Mbaygo.
The equine section provided an impressive variety of horses in an equally diverse range of classes with Equine Champion being awarded to Mr Clive Story of Yetholm with Masquerade and reserve was Mr A Redpath on Illusive Imp.
John and Lorraine Raes’ scooped both supreme champion and reserve in the Donkey Championship. Supreme champion went to SP Daisy Bouquet and reserve to SP Wind in the Willows. Eventer Champion was Cassy Mulcahy’s miniature filly Blue Manor Valencia and reserve Eventer went to Alison Wiseman’s miniature gelding Sean Connery.
Part of Glendale Show is the annual The Glendale Horticultural and Industrial Society Show, one of the North East’s finest display of fruit, vegetables baking and crafts. This year as part of the main-ring presentations Long Service Awards were made to Betty Nevins and Caroline Cummings two individuals who have been stalwarts of the Horticulture & Industrial Society for many years. Both receiving engraved salvers, they were thanked personally by President of the Society Lord James Joicey for their decades of service.
Of course, it is the eye-catching programme of events which attract crowds to watch a range of themed attractions and spectacles in the main ring. This year highlights included the Hay Farm Shire Horse demonstration, the FMX Freestyle Motocross Acrobatics Display, the Grand Parade of Livestock, Parade of the West Percy Foxhounds, Equine Fancy Dress and all the fun of watching a Tug O’ War and the Sumo Suit relay race.
Other highlights of the day were the Companion Dog Show and Dog Agility Class, Donkey Agility Class, Countryside Demonstrations in the Countywide Marquee and of course the retail opportunities across what is described as a “Pop up Shopping Mall”.
On summing up the success of the event, Secretary
of the Glendale Agricultural Society, Rachael Tait said:
“It has been a tremendous day with tremendous
crowds. Of course, we were
helped along by fabulous weather and the buzz of live music. It all provided the perfect family event that
was a true showcase of rural Northumberland bringing together the heritage of
farming as well as the innovation of new displays and demonstrations.
“As we continuously look for ways to celebrate the diversity of countryside, through both the Show and the society as a whole, we are fully aware that this would not be possible without the tremendous support that we receive from our many volunteers and sponsors, without this unwavering support the show would quite literally not happen. So, I would like to express our continued gratitude.”
