Sound Trade at Brecknock Ewe Sale

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot Society Annual Ewe Sale at Sennybridge saw a good sound trade with regular buyers from all over Wales bidding for quality stock. The two thousand plus ewes saw 100% clearance and were sold to buyers who came from all over Wales.

The top price for a pen of 20 yearling ewes went to H E Havard of Cwmbrynich, Sennybridge, who had £101 per head. The next best price went to J G Williams and son ,Blaencamlais Fawr, Sennybridge, whose pen of first prize yearlings went for £100 each . Second prize yearlings from D G Jones, Creigiau, Crai, sold to £90 each

The first prize for two and three year old sheep went to C P Phillips of Cefn Fedw Fawr, Sennybridge. He achieved a price of £67 each for his pen of 20 three year olds. The second prize for two year old ewes went to J K Morgan & Co, Gorslwyd, who achieved £84 a head.

The first prize pen of four year old ewes, sold by I G Watkings, Aberhydfer, Trecastle sold for £60. The second prize pen sold by D G Lewis of Cefnuchaf, Sennybridge went for £46.

The Judge was Alan Bennett, Bron Revel, Llanbister, Powys, who has been a regular buyer at the sale for 30 years, was delighted with the quality of stock on offer. Regular buyers included Ken Hooson, Newbridge on Wye, who bought the overall champion for £100 each and other sheep, John Kinsey of Box Farm, Hundred House, John Herdsman from Painscastle, Simon ap Jones, Meironeth.

Brecknock Hill Cheviot breeders have established the breed as ideal for improving the quality and performance of the hill breed. In the last few years, more than a hundred Brecknock Hill Cheviot tups have been put on to the moors of South West England, as well as into North Wales and other parts of the UK. The group has also established an important branded, marketing, contract with Marks and Spencer.
