Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 70 prime cattle, 7 young beef bulls, 4,525 prime hoggs and 2,278 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th January, 2007.

More heavyweight cattle were on offer with averages the same as last week.

Top price of 139.5p twice for Limousin and Belgian Blue bullocks from W.E. Lockhart & Co., Faulding Cleugh, both purchased by Messrs Nattress Butchers, Carlisle. Limousin bullocks from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn sold to 134.5p to Woodhead Bros., Colne, others to 132.5p and 131.5p The Gill, 131.5p Faulding Cleugh, 126.5p Houghton House; Blonde d’Aquitaine 134.5p N. Forster, Haining House to Woodhead Bros.; Charolais 133.5p Hallburn to to Woodhead Bros.; Belgian Blue 129.5p Hallburn to Woodhead Bros.; Belted Galloway 113.5p L.E. Grice & Son, Newtown to W. Kirkup & Son, Butcher, Longtown.

Heifers topped at 128.5p for a Limousin from D. & L. Graham, South Lambhill to Border Meats, Lockerbie, others 126.5p Hallburn; Charolais 124.5p T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke to Woodhead Bros., 123.5p Hallburn; Belgian Blue 123.5p A.S. & C.E. Coulthard, Justicetown to Border Meats, Lockerbie.

The young bull section comprised of mainly dairy sorts with heavy weight Simmentals to 111.5p and 109.5p (800kg) from T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke; Limousin 106.5p D. Ferguson & Son, Fawcettlees; Black & Whites 99.5p T.B. Imrie, Harelawhole.

Lightweight hoggs peaked at £42.80 for Continentals from Roachburn, Hallbankgate; Texel £40 Hallburn and Longrow; Hill Cheviot £37.50 Haithwaite; Greyface £36.80 Middleknowes; Blackface £35.50 Upper Glendivan; Swaledale £32 Westburnhope.

The 4,525 prime hoggs met a sharp selling trade peaking at £58 per head for Suffolks from Cowans Farm, Biglands and to 133.8p per kilo for Texels from Rinnion Hills, West Hall. Suffolk cross £56.20 Sceughdyke; Texel £55.20 Corries Mill, £52 Tinnis Hall; Bleu d’Main £53.50 Nilston Rigg; Charollais £53 Whitehead Hill; Beltex £52 Stubsgill; North Country Cheviot £48.80 Humbleheugh; Greyface £48.50 Sceughdyke; Blackface £47 Hott Farm; Hill Cheviot £47 Culquhasen; Cheviot Mule £44 High Stenries; Swaledale £42.80 Stubsgill.

The 2,278 cast ewes and rams were a smaller entry and with more buyers present trade was dearer with numbers forward short of requirements. Top of £72.50 for heavy Texel ewes from Greenlands, others £71.50 Mosshouse. Suffolks £65.50 Stackbraes, Suffolk x £56.50 Cowans, Halfbreds £48.50 Guards Mill, Cheviot Mules £42.50 Barnglies, Leicesters £51.50 Raggetsyke, North Country Cheviots £51.50 West Nubbock, Beltex £57.50 East House, Charollais £56.50 Stackbraes, Greyfaces £46.50 Englishtown, £42.50 Tonehall & Stackbraes.
