Border Crop and Grassland Management Competition 2007

Dodging the heavy showers which unfortunately have become the norm lately did not dampen the judges' enthusiasm for the quality of farming in both livestock and arable classes for the Border Crop and Grassland Management Competition.

With judges from as far afield as Milton Keynes, Huntingdon and Kircudbright the task of selecting the winner of the various classes according to the competition motto - 'It's no' what ye hae, it's what you dae with what you hae' was made no easier.

The judges were impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the entrants and all agreed they were off to apply the same enthusiasm to their own farms at home.

There were also comments made on how refreshing it was to see many of the younger generation taking on the family farm with commitment and dedication to making farming their life - and a profitable one at that with added value and looking to make the best use of their land. Within all classes, the standard of entrants was very high with differences between them being minute.

Organised jointly by the Border Union Agricultural Society and the Kelso and District Agricultural Discussion Society, the event's committee is grateful for the generous support of a number of local businesses and organisations.

Chairman Derrek Parrish, of Hassendeanburn, Hawick, said: "We would also like to thank the judges and local stewards who gave their time to visit all farms, the entrants whose hospitality was once again second to none and Ednam House who hosted the judges and the awards ceremony."

The overall winner of the championship class was Robert Jackson and Family of Detchant Farm with a real family enterprise, with Peter Tweedie of Bughtrig Farm gaining the runner-up spot.

In the Lowground Smaller class, the Gastons of Ravelaw won with Will Hamilton of Bee Edge as runners-up.

Both places in the Lowground Smaller were taken by first time entrants with the winner being John B. Fullarton of Hadden Farm and Jane Mitchell of Courthill in second place. The stockrearing class was won by Giles Henry of

Oakwood Mill, with Peter Douglas of Ruletownhead second. Conservation was won by Jim Sutherland, while Jane Mitchell of Courthill was runner-up.
