17/03/08

Charolais bulls met a ready demand selling to a top of 4,200gns in Welshpool on Thursday 13 March, at an official show and sale organised by the breed society specifically prior to the reintroduction of Bluetongue movement restrictions. The society’s annual spring fixture will continue next month.

Newroddige Beethoven - 4200gns

Newroddige Beethoven

Sale topper at 4,200gns was Newroddige Beethoven, a two year old within the breed’s top 5% with a Terminal Index (TI) of 32. An Inverlochy Resolve son and out of a dam going back to Maerdy Naser, Beethoven was bred and exhibited by the Newroddige Charolais partnership, Edingale, Tamworth and sold to T Jones, Ystrad Meurig, Dyfed.

Minutes later, the same breeders offered Newroddige Benefactor TI26, for one of the day’s two 2,800gns bids to JM Lewis, Aberystwyth. The two year old Benefactor was by Burradon Talisman, sire of the 55,000gns Perth intermediate champion, Thrunton Voldemort, and out of a Thrunton bred cow.

Shamleys Bert - 3800gns

Shamleys Bert

The day’s second leading bid of 3,800gns went to the 21 month old Shamleys Bert from BM Robinson Jnr, Tenbury Wells. Sired by Moyness Topnotch and out of a homebred cow by Coolnaslee Monarch, Bert was knocked down sold to BJ Davies, St Harmon, Rhayader.

Two more Topnotch sons found a ready demand. Cliftonpark Brutus, a 21 month old this time from Jarka Robinson made 3,500gns to EW Pritchard and Son, Crickhowell, while BM Robinson Jnr’s two year old Shamley’s Barnaby was secured for 2,800gns by DW Williams, Corwen.

Leading entry at 3,600gns from Flintshire based vet, Esmor Evans was the reserve champion, Maerdy Barre TI29, a July 2006 born Ballybrown Toby son and whose dam went back to Maerdy Grimaldi. The buyer was RP Williams and Sons, Lydbury. The same vendor offered the day’s first entry in the ring, Maerdy Ampicillin TI36, an October 2005 born Maerdy Padirac son and again, his dam carried Grimaldi bloodlines. Ampicillin commanded a 3,000gns bid from P Evans, Llandrindod Wells.

Judge, Neil Blyth, Hartlepool awarded the day’s supreme championship to Caylers Bouncer who later went on to make 3,200gns to DG Williams, Corwen. Bred and exhibited by the Barker family, Nuthampstead, this 17 month old was by Maerdy Prunty and out a Killadeas sired homebred dam.

Montgomery Berwyn, another 21 month old this time from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Welshpool commanded a bid of 3,000gns from TW Anwyl, Llanbrynmair, Powys. Berwyn was bred from homebred lines, his sire going back to Baggrave and his dam, to Ensdon lines.

At 2,600gns, Roger Everall, Shrewsbury, offered Shraden Bartholomew, a 19 month old Inverlochy Topsire son and out of a homebred cow by Balthayock Matthew to AW Mathews, Whitchurch. Earlier in the day, the same breeder offered the rising two year old Shraden Brigand, another entry going back to Balthayock Matthew and this time by Shraden Talisman. Brigand was one of two bulls to share a 2,500gns price tag and sold to JB Crow, Telford.
