Charolais met a solid demand selling to a top of 5,600gns in Welshpool,
on Thursday 17 April at the breed society’s official spring
show and sale.

“Trade was fuelled by commercial producers demonstrating a
glimpse of confidence in the sector, the first for more than 10 years,” commented
Welshpool Livestock Sales auctioneer, John Jones. “Not only
were they prepared to pay more for Charolais bulls backed by performance
data, but there have also been signs of herd expansion this spring
with suckler men investing in more cows.”
The 5,600gns sale leader was the two year old Castellmawr Bleddyn,
from father and son team, Alwyn and Medwyn Williams, Pistyll, Pwllheli.
He sold to Alun and Wyn Williams, to run with their 60 cow suckler
herd based at Lampeter. Sired by Doonally New and out of a Maerdy
bred dam by Simpsons Gregg, he was within the breed’s top 30%
with a Terminal Sire Index of 23.
Earlier on in the day, Bleddyn was awarded the supreme championship
by judge, John Green, Clitheroe who hailed him as a clear winner. “Bleddyn
is a sound commercial bull; he has scale and conformation, and he
is good on his legs,” he said. For his breeders, the entry
was their first ever championship in 10 years of breeding pedigree
Charolais and also their highest sold in Welshpool.
The day’s second top price at 4,600gns went to Maerdy Beachboy,
one of a string of eight entries to come under the hammer sold from
Mold based vet, Esmor Evans. An 18 month old Maerdy Rapace son and
out of a cow going back to Maerdy Orateur, this well muscled bull
who was placed second in his class went to IW, M and W Owen, Llanddeusant,
Holyhead. Mr Evans next highest entry at 2,800gns was Maerdy Beard,
a September 2006 born Ballybrown Toby son to OI Roberts, Llandovery.
A bid of 4,200gns secured Sarkley Boycott for N and GM Bennett, Manafon,
Welshpool. Bred by the Pennie family, Glynn, Chris and Nigel, of
Llaandysul, Boycott was a 22 month old by Moyness Lincoln and out
of a homebred cow by Simpsons Gregg.
The 20 month old Montgomery Bruce attracted a bid of 4,000gns from
WJ and BM Lewis, Pennant, Llanon. Sired by Thrunton Valiant, a son
of Burradon Talisman who produced the 55,000gns Perth supreme, Thrunton
Voldemort, Montgomery was out of a homebred cow from the Roberts
and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Welshpool.
The same vendors offered Montgomery Brad at 3,000gns to DS and GM
Pryce and Sons, Deytheur, Llansantffraid. This 22 month old was by
their homebred Montgomery Rhys, and both his parentage went back
to Baggrave Loggo.
The day’s reserve championship, Wernvale Bouncer, an 18 month
old from MA Evans, Llanrhaeadr, Denbigh commanded a 3,700gns price
tag from MH Morris and Sons, Nantglyn, Denbigh. Sired by Trefonnen
United and out of a Chiltern bred cow.
Belan Brigadier changed hands for 3,600gns to TT Jones and Sons,
Van, Llanidloes. Sired by Burradon Talisman, he was out of a homebred
cow from JS Abel, Llanidloes. The 17 month old Belan Bonanza, another
Talisman from the same vendor made 3,000gns AD Thomas and Sons, Newbridge
on Wye, Llandrindod Wells.
The day’s third lot to sell for 3,000gns was Hendy Bound, a
November 2006 born Tullygarley Rollerball son from Wyn and Diane
Rees, Llangurig, Llanidloes. The buyer was DM Jerman, Llanidloes.
Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn sold his highest entry,
Moelfre Beckham at 2,800gns to C Davies, Clun, Craven Arms. A 17
month old Gretnahouse Vigorous son, he was out of a homebred cow
going back to Killadeas Jack.
