Trinity School Pupils Heading for Royal Highland Show
10/06/08

Primary six pupils from Trinity School, Hawick, are all set for an exciting all-expenses-paid trip to the Royal Highland Show later this month after winning the schools’ competition at last week’s NSA Scotsheep 2008 event at Northhouse Farm, Teviothead.

More than 200 pupils from seven Hawick primary schools attended Scotsheep – which is Scotland’s biennial national sheep event – and were conducted on a tour of showground by volunteers from the RHET Scottish Borders Countryside Initiative.

“All the children thoroughly enjoyed their day seeing the sheep shearing, wool spinning, stick dressing, sheep dog trials and all the different breeds of sheep,” said Elizabeth Chalmers, local co-ordinator for the Royal Highland Educational Trust.

“One boy, who was disappointed not to have the opportunity of sitting on a tractor, came back at the end to say seeing all the sheep and activities at Scotsheep was a lot more fun than tractors!”

The children took part in a Treasure Trail which included a quiz relating to the exhibits they saw on their tour. The Trinity pupils chalked up the best overall average score.

Teacher, Mrs Ann Storey, said she was “over the moon” at her class’s success in the competition which had helped them gain a better understanding of the countryside and how food is produced.

“Only two of my class had ever heard of the Royal Highland Show but, following the visit to Scotsheep, they are really looking forward to their visit to Ingliston,” she said.

Host farmers for Scotsheep were Ian and Katherine Hepburn and the event was organised by the Scottish Region of the National Sheep Association with Bank of Scotland Corporate as main sponsor.
