Wharfedale dairy farmers A Lawson & Son won their first Craven Dairy Auction championship at the opening July show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart – also sending out the reserve champion for good measure to notch a notable one-two. (Mon, July 7)

The Lawsons, of Mill Farm, Arthington, Otley, secured the title with a newly calven home-bred pedigree Holstein Friesian heifer, which had produced ten days before the show and was giving 34 litres.
By the Genus sire Sinatra, the victor registered the day’s top price of £2,000 when acquired by the show judge, dairy farmer Richard Wood, of Crossroads, Keighley.
The Lawsons’ first prize newly calven cow and reserve champion, also a daughter of Sinatra and producing 30 litres seven days after calving, sold for £1,550 to Peter Sutcliffe, of Bradford.
Craven Dairy Auction regulars, father-and-son duo Raymond and Robert Johnson, of Felliscliffe, Harrogate, saw their third prize newly calven heifer achieve the second best price of the day at £1,800 when joining David Smith, Poole-in-Wharfedale.
Newly calven heifers averaged £1,583, newly calven cows £1,390 and in-calf cows £1,190.
The next Craven Dairy Auction – the second of the month - is scheduled for Monday, July 28.
