Frankland Nets Skipton Prime Lambs Double

North Craven sheep farmer Richard Frankland won his second prime lambs championship within the space of three months at Skipton Auction Mart’s August show. (Mon, Aug 4)

Richard, of New Hall Farm, Rathmell, again exhibited a pen of five Beltex-cross lambs, his 38-kilo charges selling for the day’s top price of £90 per head – his June victors also headed the prices at £83 apiece – to Mick Etherington, on behalf of Stuart Price Butchers, of Crossflatts, Keighley, who is a regular buyer of Skipton prime lamb champions.

The second prize 34-kilo pen of Continentals from Rob Paisley, of Middleton, Ilkley, sold at £64 each to another West Yorkshire butcher, RC Binns, of Shipley, while the third prize pen of 38-kilo Continentals from Richard Caton, Stainforth, was acquired for £52 each by show judge Ross Greenwood, of Carleton Farm Shop.

Best of the Suffolks, a 45-kilo pen from Andrew Taylor, Broughton, were sold for £53 per head to Paul Watson, Hellifield.

There was also a show class for Lleyns prime lambs, won by John Bownass, Hellifield, with a 40-kilo pen sold for £50 each to Gerald Medcalf, Halifax. John also exhibited the third prize pen, his 41-kilo lambs selling for £45.80 to Kepak Foods, Wakefield. Runner-up in class with a 44-kilo pen was Bernard Ogden, Austwick, sold at £53 to Andrew Atkinson, Harrogate.

The 2,745 lambs forward averaged 119.1p per kilo, with butcher buyers or their ringside representatives again eager to source quality lambs for customers. On a busy trading day, with ewes and hoggs a total of 3,088 sheep passed through the Skipton ring.
