British Charolais Shipped to Australia
09/09/08

The first exportation of British Charolais embryos this year has been shipped to Australia to Palgrove, one of the country’s largest herds owned by David and Prue Bondfield comprising more than 800 purebred Charolais cows and based in Queensland.

The private deal, which was made while the Bondfields were making a tour of British Charolais herds, was agreed between Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, Dumfries and Murray Lyle, Mid Cambushinnie, Dunblane. The exportation was facilitated by Hexham based Eggs-Port.

Bonnykelly Pandora was among the top females selected from Bob Leggat’s New Pitsligo, Fraserburgh based herd by the Goldie family for restocking purposes. “Pandora came from one of the herd’s best families; she is by Killadeas Legend who has left females with consistent good conformation combined with exceptional feminine characteristics,” according to Mr Goldie whose herd has since built up to 70 breeding females.

The Bondfields went on to choose two females, Loganbar Naomi and Loganbar Nicola from Murray Lyle’s herd of 60 breeding females. He comments: “These cows are from the herd’s two main damlines, they’re both by Loganbar Imprint who has left females will good all round maternal qualities, in particular udders and milking ability, and they go back to Livermere Royal who was noted for leaving milky females.

“We’re pleased to have had the opportunity to visit UK herds and search out some high quality donor cows with new genetics that will complement our own herd,” explains David Bondfield. “British Charolais genetics noted for their scale and fleshing ability are in great demand in Australia, and bulls sired by Goldies Unbeatable, the 2004 Royal Highland Show junior inter-breed champion, and Seawell Offshore have been finding themselves among the top lots at recent sales.” He adds: “We’re looking forward to making a return visit to the UK next month to take in more herds and include the Perth bull sales.”
