Baines Double at Skipton Prime Cattle and Lamb Shows
09/10/08

The Lancashire-based Baines beef and sheep farming family walked away with a prime cattle and lambs championship double at the October shows at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Oct 6)

Pictured with the Skipton prime lamb champions are, from left, Skipton Auction Mart’s Andrew Fisher, exhibitors Paul and Hayley Baines, and Gary Robinson, of sponsors Guy Machinery.

Father Jimmy Baines, his son and daughter Paul and Hayley, of Little Middop Farm, Gisburn, won the prime cattle class for the second month in succession with a 17-month-old British Blue-cross youngster, then minutes later saw their Texel-x-Beltex five-strong pen take the prime lambs title.

There was another double when show judge, West Yorkshire butcher Richard Binns, who runs RC & B Binns Butchers in Bingley Road, Saltaire, bought both the prime beef and lamb title winners on behalf of his shop’s customers.

He paid £989 (211p per kilo) for the best beef animal and £82 per head (195p per kilo) for the prize-winning 42-kilo lambs.

The Baines family also sold a Blonde d’Aquitaine entry in the prime cattle section for the day’s top price of £1,050.

Brian Lund, of Walshaw, Halifax, presented the reserve champion pen of 38-kilo prime lambs, acquired by another West Yorkshire butcher and regular Skipton buyer, Mark Spauls, for his two shops in Burley-in-Wharfedale and Cottingley.

Prime cattle and lamb shows, held on the first Monday of each month, are sponsored by Guy Machinery, based at Skipton Auction Mart, with prizes presented by sales executive Gary Robinson.
