Dalesbred rams gathered on home turf at Skipton Auction Mart for the 2008 show and sale on behalf of the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association. (Tues, Oct 21)

Local Dalesbred enthusiasts, both vendors and purchasers, flocked to the annual highlight, which attracted a 32-strong entry and resulted in a supreme championship success for John Bradley, of Penyghent Farm, Litton.
John secured the title with a shearling ram by an Akrigg-based David Lambert tup that cost £4,000 two years ago and won the Dalesbred championship the same year at Nidderdale Show, Pateley Bridge.
The victor sold for 260 guineas, top price in show, to John Fisher, of Rivington, Bolton, a regular buyer at the fixture, who also secured both the second and third prize shearling rams at 100 and 120 guineas respectively – the runner-up from R Jackson & Son, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the third from Richard Close, Starbotton.
Reserve champion was a three-shear aged ram from Michael and David Wilson, of JM Wilson & Sons, Crimple Head, Beckwithshaw, Harrogate. By a R Jackson & Son tup, it sold for 100 guineas to Lancashire buyers IR & M Woodhouse, Roeburndale.
The second prize aged ram came from Brian and Richard Coates, of J & AJ Coates & Sons, Ingleton, third place falling to M Steele, Cross Hills.
The title winner received the Royston Baxter Perpetual Trophy, donated by the well-known former Skipton Auction Mart foreman. In his absence, it was presented by son David.
The Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association again opted for youth when choosing the judges, William Richardson, Dent, and David Baxter, Bingley.
Association secretary Jean Bradley, of Giggleswick, who is promoting the attributes and benefits of Dalesbred sheep at every opportunity, said the breed was still proving very popular, notably for the quality of the prime lambs it produces.
