A prolific six-shear aged ram jointly used as the main stock tup by two upland farmers and near neighbours and relatives from Three Peaks country was supreme champion at the annual evening show and sale of 65 Swaledale rams at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Oct 13)

Still regularly covering 100 ewes each year, the title winner was exhibited by Frank Brennand, of A&M Brennand & Sons, Ellerbeck Farm, Chapel-le-Dale, and David Pedley, of JC & E Pedley, Yore House Farm, Lunds, Hawes.
By a Dufton-based Murton Hall ram, the champion, which received both the Robert Young Perpetual Challenge Trophy as victor and the Stephen HK Butcher Trophy as class winner, was acquired as a shearling by the duo, who between them farm 1,600 acres and some 1,300 Swaledale ewes.
Judge Ben Kidd, of Wild Boar Clough, Macclesfield, described the victor as “true to breed – a seasoned stock tup with a good mouth.” Obviously impressed, he went on to buy the title winner for 1,000 guineas, top price in show.
The first prize shearling ram and reserve show champion, awarded the M&J Spensley Trophy, was shown by Lancashire breeders Jim Walker and Richard Alpe, of Saddle End Farms, Chipping, Preston. It sold for 500 guineas to J Rayner & Sons, Pateley Bridge.
Roy Nelson, of C Nelson & Sons, Lainger House, Bordley, was runner-up in the shearling class and third in the aged rams section. His shearling sold for 400 guineas to Jimmy Baines, Trawden. Mr Nelson also sold another shearling at 460 guineas to DG Robinson, Bradfield, Sheffield.
TW Cowperthwaite, Malham Moor, was third in the shearling class, with the second prize aged ram coming from EW & SR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge, sold for 420 guineas to AJ Ogden, Cowling.
Robert Crisp, Calton, also sold a shearling at 380 guineas to G&G Jackson & Sons, Blubberhouses. The overall average selling price was £191.36.
The fixture was sponsored by Skipton-based Philip Bolland Trailer Training and Testing, who donated a £100 cash prize
