Baines Family Hat-Trick on Prime Day at Skipton

A hat-trick of consecutive monthly prime cattle championship successes was achieved by the Gisburn-based Baines family at the November show at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Nov 3)

Jimmy Baines, his son Paul and daughter Hayley, of Little Middop Farm, again saw one of their British Blue-cross youngsters chosen as best of the prime cattle class contenders.

The 550-kilo victor sold locally for £1,138 (207p per kilo) to Ross Greenwood at Greenwood’s Farm Shop, Carleton, where it will go on sale.

Pick of the prime lambs was a five-strong Beltex-x-Texel pen from North Craven sheep farmer Richard Caton, of Neals Ing Farm, Stainforth, which sold for £69 per head to Paul Watson, Hellifield.

Martin Jennings, Cowling, headed the prime lamb prices at £69.50 a head, while the best of the hill lambs from Bernard Simpson, Pateley Bridge, made £55 apiece when acquired by prime shows judge James Dewhirst, who buys on behalf of Skipton-based Stanforths Butchers. In fact, a total of 57 pens of lambs sold at £55 per head and more.

Ever-popular prime cattle and lamb fixtures, staged on the first Monday of each month, are sponsored by Guy Machinery, based at Skipton Auction Mart. Prizes this month were presented by managing director Graham Guy.
