Trade Much Improved at Skipton Gimmer Shearlings Highlight
2009-08-26

Growing confidence in the sheep sector was reflected by the much higher prices achieved at the annual show and sale of gimmer shearlings at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Aug 25)

With the Skipton Mule gimmer shearling champions are three generations of the Hall family – James Hall, centre, his teenage son William and father Gerald.

A total of 3,774 breeding sheep passed through the sales ring, averaging £102.23 per head, which was £19 higher than the average price at the corresponding fixture last year.

The high profile show, judged by Robert Moran, Nappa, remains one of the mart’s major summer events. Again prominent among the turnout were select BT-vaccinated and NEMSA-tagged consignments from regular vendors, many of which were sourced from the 2008 Skipton mule gimmer lamb sale, one of the leading fixtures of its kind in the UK.

The Edgar Boothman Memorial Trophy for the best pen of ten Mule shearling gimmers, presented by Edgar’s brother James Boothman, was awarded for the second year running to Littondale sheep farmer James Hall, of Darnbrook Farm, Darnbrook.

They sold locally for £162 per head to Joe and Nancy Throup, Draughton. Mr Hall also sold his fourth prize pen for £130 each.

Nick Dalby, Hartwith, headed the Continentals show class with a pen of Texel-cross shearlings, knocked down for £160 each to Robert Greenwood, West Marton.

The best pen of the Mashams was presented by Michael Allen, Saltburn, selling for £126 per head to Stephen Maskill, Hebden Bridge.

Mules averaged £101.60 (£82.87 in 2008), Texels £115.02 (£80.97 last year), Mashams £90.57 (2008 £64.26) and Beltex £100.15
