The 27th Northern Dairy Expo
2009-09-29

Once again The Northern Dairy Expo Show now in its 27th year hopes to continue its reign as a national autumn show fixture and one of the most popular shows for purely Holstein cattle in the UK.

2008 Champion & Reserve Champion Calf

2008 Champion & Reserve Champion Calf

The show is open to all female animals registered with the Holstein society in the UK. There are classes to suit all ages from baby calves to senior cows also to start the show off the youngest calf class is for handlers aged under 16 years to encourage youngsters into the ring.

With a prize fund of over £4,000 there are over 25 special classes and special awards and prize money right across the board with payments made to tenth place in all classes and special awards respectably from £50 to £500.

Classes include the New Exhibitor award for the exhibitor with the most points who has not shown at expo in the last five years, Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor prizes (Sponsored by Holstein UK in their 100th year) not to mention the Junior Champion and Honourable Mention collecting £150, Reserve Overall Champion receiving £250 (sponsored by FG) and the owners of the Grand Champion (sponsored by Carrs Billington Agriculture) receiving £500 along with breeding vouchers (sponsored by World Wide Sires UK Ltd).

The committee are anticipating an impressive entry of over 100 cattle from around thirty breeders in the UK.

Our judge for 2009 is Jaume Serrabassa of Spain who owns and operates Comas Novas Holsteins in the Cataluña region. He developed an appreciation for deep pedigrees and show type from an early age and has bred and owned numerous National winners.

He also has been involved working in the team of his brother Quim, exhibiting the three time Spanish winner Pachecas James Gretta, probably the most awarded cow in Spanish history. Serrabassa is a familiar face at International shows throughout Europe and South America having judged in Portugal, Italy, Germany, Brazil and Colombia.

His last home assignment was placing 212 head at the National Spring Show in Torrelavega, Spain. This summer he travelled to Ireland where he officiated at the YMA National Calf Show.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Northern Dairy Expo Show it’s beginnings came with the decision to hold a club show in 1982 by members of the North West Holstein Breeders Club, then a fledgling club.

The show is an evening event commencing at 6pm (with free entry to the show) in order to allow farmers and businesses to finish chores before attending. Hot Beef Rolls and light refreshments will be available, so for everyone interested in the Holstein Breed the Northern Dairy Expo Show is well worth a visit. There will also be a class for the crowd to judge where the person who gets the animals in the same order as the judge will receive £100 in cash. Also this year we will be running a raffle on the evening with all proceeds going towards the Great North Air Ambulance.

The entry fee is £5 per animal, which includes bedding for the stall and a hot beef roll for the exhibitor, kindly sponsored by The Shepherd Inn/Auctioneer and the closing date for entries is Thursday 15th October.

Entries are invited for this years show by contacting the secretary Jenni Wharton on 01228 792352/07752060406 or by email jenni@brenjulin.plus.com.
