Charolais bulls met a firm trade peaking at 26,000gns in Stirling on Wednesday, 23 October; 11 lots reached five figures, while 132 lots traded to achieve a £5,687 record average for the breed’s official autumn fixture as well as a first all beef breeds record average for the new centre.

“Charolais’ dominance continued from Perth to Stirling, in fact it went from strength to strength with the number of bulls sold up by more than 20% on the year and averages up £123 per head,” commented British Charolais Cattle Society chairman, Iain Millar. “Trade was market led throughout by suckler producers who were aware that Charolais crosses have not only consistently commanded premiums this season, but an even bigger price differential over other Continental crosses simply because of their fast and efficient growth and ability to finish to heavier weights which no longer suffer a penalty. These suckler men were selecting bulls that could put the scales down by leaving calves with length and weight, and also with accompanying Breedplan data.”
Sale leader at 26,000gns was the event’s senior champion, the 19 month old Balmyle Dickler from Bill Bruce, Balmyle, Meigle, Perthshire. Sired by the 14,000gns Sackville Adonis, he was out of Balmyle Ripple, a daughter of the 28,000gns Brampton Nacodar, and who is regarded as one of the 85 cow herd’s most consistent breeding females. Dickler who is in the breed’s top 5% with a TI +36 and SRI +42, was commended by judge and under bidder, Esmor Evans for his ‘hind quarters, loin and great presence’. He was knocked down sold to the Campbell family, Colin and sons, John and Ian who commented: “We regarded him as the best bull in the sale; we liked his looks and his breeding because he’s a complete outcross for our 130 cow herd.”
The Campbells shortly recouped some of their spend when they offered the 20 month old Thrunton Daredevil TI +25, SRI +34, at their day’s highest of 9,500gns to George Wordie, Glass, Huntley. A Burradon Talisman son, he was out of a homebred cow by Blelack Jaguar. Daredevil was the first of their six entries by Talisman selling to average over 6,500gns and including Thrunton Defiance TI +26, SRI +36, a first class winning 18 month old at 9,000gns to William Barbour, New Abbey, Dumfries and Thrunton Diplomat TI +21, SRI +32, another 18 month old class winner this time at 8,500gns to OT Chandler, Crucorney, Abergavenny.
Bill Bruce went on to sell a string of seven bulls to average almost 8,500gns including two more 19 month old Adonis sons, Balmyle Drambuie TI +33, SRI +38 at 9,000gns to Evans, Corfield and Son, Bishop’s Castle and Balmyle Digby TI +30, SRI +36 to CG McGillivray, Ballindalloch.
Mr Bruce invested some of the takings later in the day when he bid 12,000gns for Pennal Dazzller, a May 2008 born Dingle Hofmeister son and out of a Killadeas Jack sired homebred cow, Pennal Violet. Bred and exhibited by Alwyn Rees, Pennal, Machynlleth, this second class prize winner was accompanied by some of the highest Breedplan data in the catalogue with a TI +54 and SRI +62. He was also placed second in the society’s Young Promising Bulls register.

Blackford Dynamite at 16,000gns

Two bulls shared the day’s second leading 16,000gns price tag. First was Blackford Dynamite, the intermediate and overall supreme champion bred and exhibited by Anne MacPherson, Dalcross, Inverness who described her success as a ‘dream come true’ having established a five cow herd based on Thrunton bloodlines less than 10 years ago. “While my family has secured the Perth Simmental championship title on a handful of occasions with homebred cattle, for me winning the supreme Charolais title is in another league, and despite being my best ever bull I’ve bred, taking home the silverware was beyond my wildest expectations,” she said. For judge and Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans who has taken the championship on seven occasions, Dynamite was ‘on the day very difficult to fault’, he said. “He was very well fleshed, very correct and he had real style.”
Sired by the 15,000gns Burradon Talisman, the 18 month old was out of a homebred cow by Killadeas Jack and going back to Thrunton lines. The buyers were father and son team, Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballinamallard, County Fermanagh who keen to introduce the combined Talisman and Jack lines to join their 35 cow Killadeas herd. “We needed a new stock bull and Dynamite was our first choice; he was the perfect bull and we liked his genetics,” said Stuart.
The second 16,000gns call was made later in the day by Brian McAllister, Kells, Ballymena for the junior champion, Clyth Diplomat TI +26, SRI +34, the youngest catalogued entry at 14 months old. An Oldstone Egbert son, he was out of Clyth Vanilla who goes back to Beauchamp Foreman and was just one of two pedigree Charolais cows owned by Ronnie MacKay and running alongside a 50 cow suckler herd at Lybster, Caithness. While Mr Mackay was making his debut at the Perth Bulls Sales, Diplomat was no stranger to the ring having been awarded the supreme championship at Caithness and the male breed award at Black Isle earlier this year.
Minutes later the first of two entries at 15,000gns was knocked down sold. Goldies Dynamite TI +46, SRI +52 was an 18 month old regarded by Hamish Goldie as a ‘combination of the best bloodlines together with exceptional Breedplan figures’. This one from his 95 cow herd based at Ruthwell, Dumfries was by Goldies Ambassador who goes back to Blelack Ripple, dam of the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable, while Dynamite’s dam was Goldies Verynice, a full sister to the 34,000gns Perth champion, Goldies Uppermost. The buyers were father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie, Blelack, Dinnet, Aboyne.
The Goldies also offered for 6,000gns Goldies Derek, a 16 month old by the 10,000gns Perth reserve intermediate champion, Newroddige Venture and out of a homebred dam by the 20,000gns Blelack Rustic. Derek was knocked down sold to RG Stuart, Rothiemay, Huntly.
The second 15,000gns bid was made for Gower Drambuie TI +37, SRI +42 who achieved the best ever price for Richard and Alison Tucker in the 20 years they have been making the frequent 1,000 mile round trip to Perth from Gower, Swansea. Led out by their son Will, Drambuie was a 17 month old Dingle Hofmeister son and out of Gower Sangria who hails from a family that is consistently breeding five figure bulls. He went to join Iain and Dot Goldie’s Solwayfirth herd, Cummertrees, Annan.
Willie Whyte, Fraserburgh achieved his highest price ever when he took 11,000gns from T Smith and Son, Whitehouse, Alford for his Hindstones Daimler TI +26, SRI +34, an 18 month old by the 8,500gns Trafaldwyn Valiant and out of a homebred cow going back to Padeswood Mercedes.
Another Welsh team making a worthwhile 800 round mile trip were John Howells and his son, Peter, Llanwenog, Llanybydder, with their sole entry, Gwenog Danzyboy who headed his class and went on to command a second 11,000gns bid from S Sinclair, Latheron, Caithness. The 16 month old Danzyboy was by the 16,000gns Blelack Tycoon whose eight sons sold in Perth have averaged 7,500gns, while he was out of a homebred cow going back to Derryharney Outstanding.
Four lots shared a 10,000gns price tag. First to go was Alwent Dollar TI +41, SRI +49, an April 2008 born bull, second class prize winner and sole entry from Stephen Nesbitt who was enjoying one of his best ever days in 30 years at the event. This one was sired by Alwent Vougeot, one of the top 10 young bulls at Moulins, the breed’s annual grand final show in France and whose first crop of bulls have sold to average 6,000gns. Dollar was out of the Edenhurst Pioneer sired Alwent Athena who is a member of Mr Nesbitt’s 25 cow herd based at Winston, Darlington. The buyer was A Rodger, Duns, Berwickshire.
Minutes later, Neil Barclay, Crathes, Banchory offered Harestone Domino TI +31, SRI +39 at 10,000gns to Jean Atkinson, Thorpe Basset, Malton. Another 18 month old, Domino was a Balmyle Addition son and out of a hombred dam. Another entry from the same breeder, Harestone Douglas TI +26, SRI +28, a 17 month old Harestone Tadorne son and out of a homebred dam by the 25,000gns Thrunton Socrates went for 6,500gns to Easter Tulloch, Laurencekirk, Kincardinshire.
Alwyn Willams, Pistyll, Pwllheli achieved his best ever at 10,000gns from Michael Durno, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch for the 17 month old Castellmawr Danial, by the 10,000gns Carlisle supreme champion, Gwenog Vindicator and out of a Reddivallen dam by Coley Jackpot.
The final 10,000gns call was made for Airdlin Dictator, a May 2008 born Janos Ubet son and out of a homebred cow going back to Beachamp Foreman. Bred and exhibited by Iain Thomson’s Airdlin Partnership, Ythanbank, Ellon, this first class prize winner sold to C Paterson, Tankerness, Orkney.
The first of three 9,500gns bids was made early in the day for Carwood Charmer TI +28, SRI +31, a rising two year old and second class prize winner from Colin Wight, Biggar. Sired by Kelton Trident, he was out of a homebred cow going back to the 12,000gns Midlock Parker and was no stranger to the ring having secured the reserve senior title at the Scottish and Northern National Charolais Show. The buyer was F Walker, Alford, Aberdeen.
Corcreevy Dingle, a May 2008 born class winner by Domino and out of an Allanfauld Vagabond sired Mountjoy bred cow, was knocked down sold for 9,500gns to Hugh Dalrymple, Ballantrae, Girvan. Bred by D Orr, he was offered by N and A McCrea, Coagh, County Tyrone.
Next at 9,000gns was the 18 month old Allanfauld Dambuster TI +32, SRI +37 from Archie MacGregor, Kilsyth, Glasgow to JW Anderson, Laurencekirk. Sired by Harestone Tyrol, his dam was a homebred cow going back to the 10,500gns Gretnahouse Noel.
Three more lots commanded a 9,000gns price tag. First was the overall reserve and reserve intermediate champion, Brynffanigl Director TI +29, SRI +36, from Bob and Rhion Roberts, Ucha, Abergele. An 18 month old by the 17,000gns Alsnow Almighty and out of a homebred dam from the father and son team’s 35 cow herd, Director was commended by judge, Esmor Evans for his ‘growth and power’. While he was no newcomer to the ring having collected the interbreed junior championship title at the Royal Welsh last season, he achieved both the highest accolade and the highest price for the Roberts in their 25 years of travelling to Perth.
The Robert’s also enjoyed success with their second entry by taking a first prize ticket with Brynffanigl Duncan, another 18 month old Almighty son and reserve junior champion at the Royal Welsh. He made 5,000gns to Nether Balfour, Drumoak, Banchory.
Fellow Welsh breeder, Gareth Jones, Cwymtirmynach, Bala attracted the final 9,000gns call with his Esgob Dotcom TI +34, SRI +43, a 17 month old by the 18,000gns Thrunton Virginian and of a homebred dam. This second class prize winner was knocked down sold to D Bryce and Son, Kilry, Alyth. A second Virginian son from Gareth Jones, the 18 month old Esgob Deano TI +25, SRI +37 sold for 7,500gns to join the Milne family’s Elgin herd, Lhanbryde, Elgin.
Finally, Northern Ireland breeder, Sean McGovern, of Cloger made another worthwhile trip over the water when he sold for 9,000gns his Ratoary Dturbo, a 16 month old Oldstone Egbert son and out of a Deerfin bred dam going back to Doonally New. He continued on his journey to Orkney with T Leslie, Shapinsay.
Next at 8,800gns was Auchincrieve Detroit TI +44, SRI +45, a 19 month old by Celtic Vichy and out of a Blelack bred cow going back to Maerdy Oxo. Bred and exhibited by CM McCombie, Knock, Huntly, the buyer was Shanry Farm, Rait, Perth. Also in the money was another Vichy son from the same breeder, the 18 month old Auchincrieve Dornfelder TI +33, SRI +41 who went for 7,000gns in a joint spilt to Anne MacPherson, Torness and Ewan Fraser, Gorthleck, Inverness.
A bid of 6,800gns secured the reserve senior champion, Balmaud Diplomat for DW Sinclair, Sandwick, Orkney. This March 2008 born entry by the 11,000gns Maerdy Tank and out of a Fordafourie bred dam was led out by Andrew Reid for Wilson and Gerardine Strachan, King Edward, Banff.
Securing a 5,000gns price was the reserve junior champion, Strathys Dictator TI +28, SRI +32, a 15 month old from Kevin Mallarkey, Hatton, Peterhead. A son of the 28,000gns Farleycopse Turbo, he was out of an Airdlin bred dam, one of three cows in the herd which he established five years ago on his grandfather’s croft. Dictator went home with W Sutherland, Isle of Skye.
The female section was headed at 5,500gns by the female reserve champion, Forfar Catriona, a two year old Givendale Ulysse daughter, out of a homebred dam going back to Blelack Rapier and sold in calf to the 24,000gns Mowbraypark Torpedo. Bred and exhibited by Neil and Judith Murray, Scone, Perth she sold to Messrs Stevenson, Anstruther, Fife.
Following at 4,800gns was the female champion, Elgin Delia TI +31, SRI +36 by Harestone Tyrol and out of a homebred dam. Bred and exhibited by the Milne family, Llanbryde, Elgin she sold to Messrs McAskie, Keith, Aberdeen.
Averages: 132 bulls £5,687.07; four cows and calves £1,680; 14 heifers £2,565.
