Moet Daughter On Song for Moorhouse Craven Dairy Auction Hat-Trick 2009-10-14

Yorkshire Dales dairyman Brian Moorhouse landed his third Craven Dairy Auction championship in as many months at the opening October show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Oct 12)

Brian, of Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, title winner at shows in both August and September, achieved a memorable hat-trick with a home-bred pedigree Holstein Friesian second calver cow, by the Genus bull Moet Melody. Giving 35 litres, she sold for the top call of £2,120 to prolific Skipton dairy cattle buyer Wick Williams, of Nantwich, Cheshire.

Mr Williams also paid £1,880 for the reserve champion, the first prize newly calven heifer from R D Metcalfe & Son, Grange Farm, Brearton, Harrogate, on only their second foray as Craven Dairy Auction vendors. Giving 27kg, the home-bred runner-up is another product of Genus breeding lines, being by Roylane Jordan, out of a Convincer-sired dam.

Robert Crisp, Nelson Farm, Calton, presented the top price newly calven heifer, a £2,110 acquisition by another regular Skipton buyer Geoff Bleazard, Ribchester. Mr Crisp also exhibited the second and third prize newly calven heifers, the latter selling at £1,920.

Malcolm and Robert Swires, Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw, had the second and third prize newly-calven cows, sold at £1,980 and £1,880 respectively to C & JR Terry, Fountains, and David Houseman, Darley.

A consignment of British Friesian in-calf heifers from the late John Reynoldson, Skyreholme, was responsible for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in class, all bought by Clarence Smith, Sutton-in-Craven, to a top price of £1,080.

There was also a clean sweep of prizes in the maiden heifers class by Alan Chapman, Langtoft, Driffield, selling to a high of £740.

With 86 dairy cattle forward, newly calven heifers averaged £1,819, newly calven cows £1,597, in-calf heifers £790 and maiden heifers £403. Show judge was Frank Wrathall, Gisburn.
