Cogent Confirmed as Having the Top Type Bulls
2010-05-11

UK breeding company, Cogent, has strengthened its position as Europe’s top type bull stud, following this week’s visit from Holstein UK’s independent classifiers.

Two hot new bulls - Cogent Azure and Woodmarsh Metalic – have both been classified by the breed society with an EX95 score, bringing the total number of live bulls at the stud with this exceptional score to five. This places the Cogent stud far ahead of its closest rivals throughout the whole of Europe for bull conformation.

“As a company, Cogent has built its reputation on producing bulls which will breed the type of cow the farmer wants to milk, and our latest figures convincingly reinforce this position,” says sire analyst, Simon Moseley. “We now have five bulls on the premises with EX95 scores, as well as compelling evidence that each of these bulls passes his high type credentials on to his daughters.

“I doubt whether you would find five bulls of this type calibre on any other single premises in the world.

“Our analysts have years of experience in sire selection and whatever fads in breeding come and go, they always regard it as important to breed a cow that is durable and able to withstand the rigours of modern-day milk production, as well as being a pleasure to milk,” adds Mr Moseley.

“If the bull himself has a strong conformation and constitution to start with, then that stacks the odds in the farmer’s favour when it comes to his milking daughters.”

Classifying at Cogent’s Cheshire premises this week, Holstein UK’s head classifier, Meurig James, commented on the ‘tremendous display of bulls with excellent dairy strength and outstanding feet and legs’, which were a real credit to their breeders.

Catching his eye in particular was Cogent Azure (Oman x VG89 Aaron) which he said had ‘superb width through the front end, excellent dairy character and walked on a tremendous set of legs and feet’.

Also commenting on the impressive EX95-classified Woodmarsh Metalic (Titanic x EX90(3) Mtoto), he admired his ‘tremendous body conformation, balance and style, with ideal dairy strength’.

All bulls in the Cogent stud have been specifically selected to suit UK farming conditions; proven through the Visions Young Sire Programme on British farms and independently assessed for production, type and fitness.

The stud’s five bulls classified EX95 are: Dalbytop Phil, Cogent Loader, Netherside Dynamo, Woodmarsh Metalic and Cogent Azure.
