David Bamforth, of L Bamforth & Sons, Wainstalls, Halifax, once again exhibited both the champion and reserve champion prime cattle, just as he did at the previous fixture. The Calderdale showman has now sent out the title winner at all but one of the monthly prime beef shows this year.
Robert Towers, of Farleton, Lancaster, was prime lamb victor again – his pure-bred Charollais also landed a championship and reserve championship double at this year’s Easter prime lambs show. Mr Towers also sent out the title winners at the corresponding fixture in 2009.
In the beef ring, Mr Bamforth’s first prize British Blue bullock, which went on to take championship honours, sold for the top price of £1,341 (223.5p per kilo) to Keelham Hall Farm Shop at Thornton, Bradford.
The shop’s James Robertshaw is a frequent buyer of Skipton prime beef and lamb champions for Keelham Hall Farm Shop’s award-winning butchers department. He was purchasing his third Bamforth title winner of the year.
For good measure, Keelham Hall Farm Shop acquired all three Bamforth prime cattle forward at the sale, also successfully bidding for the reserve champion Limousin heifer at £1,058 (211.5p/kg) and the third prize British Blue heifer at £980 (209.5p/kg).
Another four-figure achiever was the second prize Limousin bullock from John and Alison Spensley, Thorlby, acquired for £1,082 (161.5p.kg) by James Dewhurst on behalf Stanforth Butchers, Skipton.
Show judge, Saltaire butcher Richard Binns, also sourced prize winning beef for his shop when purchasing the third prize British Blue heifer from Jimmy Baines, Trawden, for £917 (199.5p/kg).
Prime lamb honours again fell to Robert Towers with a pen of three Charollais. For the second month in succession, they caught the eye of Red Rose butcher buyer George Cropper, who also judged the May classes. His latest 40kg acquisitions, which achieved top price at £148 per head (370p/kg), will again be going on sale from this weekend at Mr Cropper’s shop in Accrington Market.
The first prize and reserve champion 45kg Suffolks from Matthew Reeday, of F Reeday & Son, Hetton, were purchased at £120 per head by Mick Etherington on behalf of West Yorkshire butcher Mark Spauls for his shops in Burley-and-Wharfedale and Cottingley.
Mr Etherington also paid £109 each for the second prize 40kg Charollais lambs from Martin Preston, Silsden, for Dan Woodend Butchers in Adel, Leeds.
The prime cattle show was sponsored by Philip Bolland Trailer Training and the prime lamb show by Guy Machinery.
