Aberdeen-Angus Stock Form New Herd in Central Italy

A consignment of Aberdeen-Angus heifers and a yearling bull from Shropshire-based Robert Lane’s Penguin herd are on their way to Italy to fulfill an export order worth £25,000.

The cattle were bought by Sheila Eggleston of Eggs-Port Ltd of Hexham and were later sold to establish the new Angus herd in Central Italy.

Purchaser Ms D’Antonio said:  “The Aberdeen-Angus breed is incredibly popular in Italy. The area is hilly, cold in the winter with a mild spring and summer, so we need a breed that thrives well under those conditions. It’s also a great opportunity to start a herd with some of the breed’s best genetics.

Having been impressed by the taste of Aberdeen-Angus beef and hearing various endorsements from chefs in their area, the D’Antonio family plan to sell pure bred beef to meet the growing demand for quality Aberdeen-Angus beef.     

These cattle originate from some of the most famous female lines in the breed. The consignment includes yearling heifers from the Penguin Jestress, Tidy Bee, Lady Heather and Evening Tinge families.

The young bull Penguin Express J377 is a son of the great DMM Posi-Traction out of DMM Essence 12N – the result of an imported embryo. Mr Lane has previously produced many top priced cattle and is a past president of the Aberdeen Angus Society. He is now looking forward to visiting Italy to oversee development of the new herd.

Sheila Eggleston of Eggs-Port said: “Demand for Aberdeen-Angus cattle and genetics continues to grow and this breed forms a major part of our export work be it live cattle, semen or embryos. The genetics in this consignment will no doubt form the basis of a great herd in Italy.”
