Cornish Young Farmer Wins Jersey Youth Travel Award

David Christophers from St Allen, Truro, bowled-over the judges for the Jersey Youth Travel Award with his enthusiastic description of how he sees the Jersey breed ‘dominating the world dairy sector.’

David Christophers, Cornwall, winner of the Jersey Youth Travel Award is off to North America in November.

David identifies the breed’s ability to maintain persistent yields while retaining its high fertility and better feed conversion efficiency as its greatest attributes.

“From high input - high output to low input – low output systems the Jersey has the ability to adapt, thrive and maintain profitability,” David explains.

The reward for his passionately held views is a place on the two-week JISEX International visit to the USA and Canada in November.

During the visit David will attend the NAILE Show in Louisville, Kentucky, - the world’s largest livestock exhibition – which incorporates the Jersey Pot-of-Gold Sale and Futurity Show. In total some 350 Jersey cattle are exhibited from all across the USA.

David will then visit sixteen Jersey herds in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Pennsylvania before ending-up at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

David Christophers is already the proud owner of a number of Jersey cows, the Trerose prefix, which are run alongside the family’s Rosehill Ayrshire herd. Trerose Jerseys have already made their mark, winning the Jersey Breed Championship at the 2008 Royal Cornwall Show.

Runner-up to Denmark

Isobel Wright, Fourcrosses herd Staffordshire, will visit Agromek and Danish farms as the runner-up in the Jersey Youth Travel Award.

Isobel Wright from the Fourcrosses Jersey herd in Staffordshire was runner-up in the Travel Awards and will visit the Agromek Exhibition as well as a number of farms in Denmark.

Breeding Jerseys which can last six or more lactations, yielding over 6500kg milk at six per cent butterfat and four percent protein is the target whish Isobel believes can be achieved. The environmental benefits of keeping Jersey cows make this a very attractive proposition.

Isobel Wright won the All-Breeds All-Britain Calf Show Coloured Breeds Handler Championship in 2005 and her success in this award added to the family’s achievement in winning the Lily Hill Cup, also at this year’s Dairy Event.
