Brian, victor at the opening October show a fortnight earlier and a multiple Craven Dairy Auction title winner, achieved his latest coup with a newly calven home-bred Holstein Friesian heifer from his renowned Aireburn pedigree herd, based at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk.

By the Semex bull Braedale Freelance and giving 32 litres, the champion, recipient of the BOCM Pauls Trophy from monthly sponsor Keith Colley, sold for £1,710 to Wick Williams, of Nantwich, Cheshire.

A frequent buyer at the Craven Dairy Auction ringside, Mr Williams also snapped up the other two top performers on the day – the second prize newly calven heifer and reserve show champion from Robin Jennings, of South Stainley, Ripon, for £1,740, and the top price newly calven heifer at £1,770 from Jeremy Taylor’s Smellows herd at nearby Broughton.

As usual, the top end of the milkers sold well, averaging £1,700, with the overall selling average for the 40-strong entry of newly calven, in-calf and maiden heifers and cows levelling at £1,556. Judge was John Crosier, Gisburn.
