Swires Supreme Again at Craven Dairy Auction
2011-01-25

The most prolific Craven Dairy Auction champions in recent history struck yet again to secure their first success of 2011 and their 15th title win in total at the second January show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Mon, Jan 24)

Father-and-son dairymen Malcolm and Robert Swires, of Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw, Harrogate, saw their newly calven Holstein Friesian commercial heifer giving 32.5 litres land the victor’s spoils.

The home-bred is by Myersdale Principal, acquired from Geoff Spence, Northallerton. The same sire has been responsible for a number of the Swires’ Skipton championship successes, including their most recent win last July.

Their latest title winner, recipient of the BOCM Pauls Dairy Cup from the company’s Keith Colley, sold for £1,980 to Ken Liversedge, of Wilberfoss, York.

The Swires made a clean sweep of the prizes in the heifers’ class, as well as presenting the second prize newly calven cow.

It was their second prize heifer that achieved top price in show at £2,020 when joining Alan Outram, Bury. The ten-strong Swires’ entry of newly calven milkers all sold well to an average of £1,756.

The reserve champion was the first prize second calver 30-litre cow from Gordon Beresford, of Green Farm, Halton West, which joined Wick Williams, Nantwich, for £1,840, top price in class.

Best of the in-calf heifers came from Robert Phillip, Hellifield, sold at £1,240 to David Shuttleworth, Gargrave, who also paid top call in class at £1,510 for another entry from the same exhibitor.

Show judge was Gordon Emmott, Steeton. With 46 dairy cattle forward, of the 27 newly calven milkers heifers averaged £1,660 and cows £1,548.
