2011-04-20

Aberdeen Angus bulls led the way at this week’s native breeds show and sale, hosted by Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.

Alan and Lana Cheney, Trillick, with their first prize winning bull, Lana Claude J603, which topped the Dungannon Aberdeen Angus trade at 4,200gns.

Prices soared to a top of 4,200gns, and 11 bulls changed hands to average £2,415 – an increase of £339 on the same period last year.

The sale leader was the first prize winning Lana Claude J603, brought out by the husband and wife team of Alan and Lana Cheney from Trillick, County Tyrone. This June 2009 born entry was sired by Heathlands Jacuzzi Eric, and is out of a home-bred dam by Lana Performer B761. He boasts a milk value of +6 and a Breedplan Self Replacing Index of +29.

The securing bid came from pedigree breeders Jim and May Jack, who run the noted 80-cow Strule herd based at Fivemiletown, County Tyrone. The Cheney duo were delighted with their days work which netted a new herd record price for the 35-cow herd established in 1996.

Second highest bid of the day 3,500gns, was paid to Neville and Ivan Forsythe, Moneymore, County Londonderry, for the third prize winning Coltrim Lord Josh J354. Born in November 2009, he is a son of the herd’s jointly owned stock bull, Wedderlie Net Profit. His dam, Coltrim Lady Joy D851 is one of 40-cows in the long-established herd which dates back to 1928.

With a self replacing index of +39 and a milk value of +7, he sold to suckler herd owner, James O’Rawe from Gracehill, near Ballymena, County Antrim.

The pre-sale show was judged by Coote Geelan who runs the Baltimore Hereford herd based at Longford. He awarded the male championship ribbons to the December 2009 born Annaghone Millryan J776, consigned by the father and son team of John and Paul Millar from Cookstown, County Tyrone.

Sired by Nightingale Papa A069, and bred from the Mancini of Drumlister daughter, Annaghone Millrebekah F902, he came under the hammer of auctioneer, Trevor Wylie, at 2,800gns. The buyer was John Hatrick from Creggan Farm, Londonderry.

The reserve male champion came from Neville and Ivan Forsythe’s Coltrim herd. Coltrim Excalibur J376 was born in November 2009, and is also by the Aynho Rossiter Eric son, Wedderlie Net Profit E916. His dam, Coltrim Elbena C755, hails from the herd’s noted Evana family – top placed cow family in the NI Aberdeen Angus Club’s 2010 herd competition. The highest bidder at 2,200gns was Patrick McNamee from Douglasbridge, Strabane, County Tyrone.

Sarah Matchett, Portadown, with her Aberdeen Angus female champion, Birches Penny.

Females reached a ceiling of 1,100gns twice for Jim and May Jack, Fivemiletown. First to sell was the two-year-old Strule Vine J526 by Netherton Four Square D304. Her herd mate, Strule Eurevine J891 was born in May 2009 and is a daughter of the Rawburn Transformer son, Lana Black Transformer C063.

The female champion, Birches Penny K853, was exhibited by brother and sister, Sam and Sarah Matchett from Portadown. This yearling entry was sired by Cashelane Lord Jeremy, and is bred from a Lissard Mark daughter carrying the Drumcrow prefix. She sold to Victor Emerson from Moy, County Tyrone for 950gns.

The reserve female champion was the April 2009 born Railview Popular J114, shown by Marcus and Norman Rutledge from Omagh, County Tyrone. She was sired by Coneyisland Legend E112, and is out of a home-bred Maine Dragon daughter.
