Such is the appetite for Troon malting barley in Europe that
nearly 1000m/t of seed from England and Scotland has been shipped
to Denmark to supplement supplies for the country's cereal growers.
The majority of Denmark's malting barley is exported to German
and Eastern European end users, including their crop of Troon.
Last growing season was Troon's first year in Demark so seed supply
was limited and consequently not enough to fulfil demand. As a
result the UK has had to step in to provide the additional seed
needed.
Seed production for next year has now been increased to more than
3000ha, which will boost Troon's market share to around 10% in
Denmark, with potential for it to be the leading variety.
The picture shows Joss Vincent, of Nickerson, overseeing the loading
of 24m/t of Troon seed from Nickerson's seed plant in Holton le
Clay, Lincolnshire - its destination Denmark.
Nickerson have also sold a substantial amount of Troon to suppliers
in Germany, and are currently concluding negotiations to supply
an Eastern European country directly.
