MDC streamlines Herd
Genetic Report Publication
04/03/05
Milk producers are receiving their last routine Herd Genetic Report
this month, March, from the Milk Development Council's genetic
evaluation unit (MDCEL). In May 2005, when the next proof run takes
place, producers will get a special one-off herd report. From then
on, to receive regular Herd Genetic Reports, either quarterly off
the internet or twice a year by post, producers will need to complete
the registration form which will accompany the March report.
Until now, all dairy farmers with official milk records have received
a full Herd Genetic Report from MDCEL after the February and August
genetic evaluation runs. Each report includes the predicted transmitting
abilities (PTAs) and financial genetic indices - £PIN and £PLI
- for all live cows in the herd, together with a summary showing
the average PTAs for each lactation group.
The more flexible approach to issuing Herd Genetic Reports is
in response farmer feedback. “The range of options is designed
for suit all producers, but those registering for electronic copies
will get four updates a year and will also be able to use the interactive
tools to help interpret the data,” says MDC chief executive
Kevin Bellamy.
“More regular updates will be a great advantage to those
using the Herd Genetic Report as an integral part of their breeding
planning.
“Other producers will prefer to register to receive two
copies a year by post, whereas some may prefer not to get regular
updates but an ad hoc copy that they can request by telephone.
