In the state opening of Parliament Her Majesty the Queen set
out her Government's policies and proposed legislative programme
for the new parliamentary session.
Speaking in response, NFU President, Tim Bennett, said: “The
Queen's speech has identified a number of key issues for
farmers and growers in England and Wales. The NFU will lobby
hard to ensure the interests of the industry are strongly represented
during the coming heavy legislative programme.
“The introduction of legislation to streamline regulatory
structures is something the NFU has lobbied for vigorously. Duplication
and overly burdensome red tape are currently stifling business
flair within the industry. Removing regulatory barriers will
give farmers and growers the flexibility to adapt to the demands
of the modern business environment.”
“The commitment to modernise the management of common
land is wholeheartedly welcome. I have been lobbying for reform
in this area for the past decade.”
The NFU has identified several items in which it will be taking
an active interest including:
• The introduction of a Bill to modernise the management
of common land.
• The introduction of legislation to streamline regulatory
structures and make it simpler to remove outdated or unnecessary
legislation.
• Legislation to ensure the better management of the environment
and to provide support for rural communities.
• Commitments to achieving sustainable development and
support rural services.
• Commitments to promote efficiency, productivity and value
for money.
