    Deadline Approaches For Biodiversity Award
18/07/05

NFU Scotland's annual Excellence Awards, which were launched at the Royal Highland Show by Ross Finnie, Environment & Rural Affairs Minister, now look forward to their fifth successful year.

The Farmland Biodiversity Award, sponsored by RSPB Scotland, will be the first of the three awards to be judged. The judging of this award is taking place earlier to allow the judges time to observe the projects at their best. Nominations are being encouraged as soon as possible.

John Kinnaird, NFU Scotland President, said:

"Members of the farming community can sometimes be reluctant to blow their own trumpets about their often phenomenal achievements in biodiversity. That is why we encourage people and organisations to nominate friends, family members or colleagues as well as themselves, for these awards.

"Following CAP Reform it is becoming increasingly important for farmers to ensure that their farming practices work in harmony with wildlife conservation and our aim is to recognise and reward those who provide the best examples of integrating conservation into their overall agricultural activities.

"I would encourage people not to be shy. There is much to be gained by entering these awards, not just in terms of prize-money and a valuable biodiversity audit but also in terms of helping to raise awareness amongst the wider community about what farmers can and are doing to protect and enhance Scottish wildlife, flora and fauna."

RSPB Scotland Director, Stuart Housden, said:

"We are delighted to sponsor this important award. Farming is the main force that shapes Scotland's wildlife habitats. Farming that is done in sympathy with the needs of birds and biodiversity in mind is essential if we are to protect and enhance the countryside. The range of past applications clearly illustrates the diversity and richness of Scottish wildlife and the key role that Scottish farmers and crofters can play in protecting and enhancing this to everyone's benefit. I look forward to seeing more quality applications and encourage all to apply."

Nomination forms can be obtained by logging on to www.nfus.org.uk or by calling 0131 472 4020. Closing date for applications is Wednesday 7 September 2005.
