The Tenant Farmers Association has been proud to sponsor the prestigious 2005 National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs' Farm Business Development Competition. The final of the competition took place today at the Royal Show.
The competition, which attracted entries from young farmers around the country, centred on a hypothetical farm where the existing farmer was retiring and interested in creating an opportunity for granting a new tenancy or other business arrangement to a new entrant. The competitors had to produce a tender which analysed the business opportunity taking into account relevant law and recent policy changes including the Single Payment Scheme.
TFA Chief Executive George Dunn who was one of the competition judges said, "I was very impressed by the high standard of entries and pleased to see the amount of thought and passion that had gone into drawing up the tenders. The technical knowledge and innovative ideas of the entrants produced some exciting, yet viable, farm plans. Although in any competition you have got to select a winner, all entrants will have gained invaluable experience from this competition which will stand them in good stead when responding to real opportunities".
"We have seen the potential that is out there. The farming industry now needs to create opportunities for these young people and once in, we need to retain them. The Fresh Start initiative, which is supported by the TFA, is addressing the need to attract new entrants into farming but we also need the commitment of landlords and older family members on owner-occupied farms to give these talented young people a chance." said Mr Dunn.
The TFA is able to assist potential tenants who are considering entering into the industry, through its Associate Membership Scheme. Costing only £55 per year it gives new entrants access to advice and guidance including information on comparable rents. Further information can be obtained from the TFA's stand (F701) at the Royal Show.
