The 2005 Great Yorkshire Show is an all time record breaker. Organisers the Yorkshire Agricultural Society have announced that the attendance figure of 134,810 is higher than any in the event's 167 year history. The previous best was 131,075 in 1979.
The show which ended on Thursday (14 July) opened to glorious weather on Tuesday (12th) which continued over the three days.
It was wonderful news for Christopher Hall, the Honorary Show Director who stepped down from office at the closing ceremony. Mr Hall has been at the helm of the Show for the last seven years.
He said: "We have had a marvellous show, the weather has been superb, there have been record breaking entries in the livestock classes, we have had more trade stands than ever before, and now we have the news of the attendance figures. The Great Yorkshire Show is the finest show in the country, and I am sure it will continue to go from strength to strength."
The Show, was brought to a close by the Normandy Band after which Mr Hall handed over his crook of office to his successor, Bill Cowling and then left with Jackie Hall in a landau drawn by two coloured horses to applause of appreciation from the grandstand crowds.
Mr Cowling who farms at Pannal near Harrogate, was formerly the show's Chief Cattle Steward and a member of its Council, Executive Committee and chairman of the YAS Grants and Education Committee. His first task as Honorary Show Director will be to head the annual de-brief, before continuing plans for the show's sister event, Countryside Live on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October 2005 and the 2006 Great Yorkshire Show, Tuesday 11 - Thursday 13 July, the 148th show.
