MASTER butcher Dick van Leeuwen has joined the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) as project manager with responsibility for the independent butchery and small abattoir sectors.
He did his training at the widely acclaimed Utrecht School of Butchery in Holland after which he worked in various sectors of the industry including retail outlets and processing plants.
Then he joined the Meat and Livestock Commission in the late 1980s working on the development of new cuts and joints for the retail and foodservice sectors.
Dick, 46, said: "I have been a meat man all my life, working in a number of different areas of the industry.
"What I am now doing is using my experience to help small and medium sized abattoirs and independent butchers. There is also some crossover into foodservice."
Dick, who was given the National Association of Catering Butchers Award in 2001 for his contribution to the British meat industry, is married with three children. In his spare time he is a keen mountain biker.
EBLEX trade sector manager Phil Davies said: "I am delighted to have Dick as a member of the trade marketing project team; he brings a wealth of practical meat industry experience, which will be invaluable to the sectors he will be responsible for."
