A leading miller has declared its support for all Group 2 wheats, and is warning against the exclusion of particular varieties over others.
Jim Shine, of Rank Hovis, acknowledges that there are clear differences in the end-use characteristics of the majority of Group 2s grown in the UK, however in his opinion “all will find a place in UK grists, because, rather than in spite of these differences”.
As an example, he points out that Soissons, registered in 1988, still commands a market share. “Millers welcome diversity and support it by purchasing a range of varieties which deliver this.” Equally, he says growers should be looking at the potential from the other three main Group 2s - Einstein, Cordiale and Solstice - whilst determining the varietal requirements of their local miller.
“I deplore it when one variety is knocked at the expense of another,” says Mr Shine. “Recent comments about Einstein do not reflect the reality of the situation. There is a milling market for Einstein, and Rank Hovis are certainly looking for quantities of it for our mills.
“Growers should realise that millers need a range of attributes from the grain they buy.”
Lee Robinson of Einstein's breeders Nickerson, adds: “Not only is Einstein in demand from millers, it is also in demand for export - growers of Einstein have both markets available to them.
“As one of the ukp branded wheats it is particularly suitable for the overseas bread-making market. Where this market is a key part of your selling options Einstein should be first choice.
“The most important thing to remember,” says Mr Robinson “is to consider your local markets - whether they are milling or export. This is vital in ensuring you get a good return on your crop.”
