A SPECIALIST executive programme for future leaders of the red
meat industry was launched at the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF)
conference in London on 2 November. The 'Fellowship in Manufacturing Management for the Red Meat Industry'
comes in response to sector recruitment and retention issues. It
uses a mix of management development and specialist meat industry
knowledge and is the only programme of it's kind in Europe. The fifteen-month course, which involves residential periods at
Cranfield, Cambridge and Roskilde in Denmark, is due to start next
Autumn. It will follow a three-tier approach combining individual
study, mentoring and practical reinforcement. Students remain in their current business role throughout and
the final phase of the course involves a major project that aims
to provide measurable benefits to their company. Applications are
now being accepted and a selection centre will be run in the Spring. Bill Jermey, Chairman, Meat Training Council said: "I am
sure future industry leaders will benefit enormously from such
a unique programme. Working alongside their contemporaries from
other countries will provide a valuable extra perspective." Neil Hammond, Pork Business Unit Managing Director, Grampian Country
Food Group said: "Operating in today's highly competitive
market place there is a real need to have a world leading management
development programme for high-achieving young leaders in the meat
industry. I am greatly encouraged by the launch of this Fellowship." Created by the RMIF in conjunction with Cranfield University and
the Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, the course
is fully supported by the Meat Training Council and has been developed
with help from major processing businesses countrywide. Notes: Conference sponsors include Asda, BPEX, Carbon Trust, Defra,
Deloitte, EBLEX, Farmers Weekly, Foodex Meatex, Grampian Country
Food Group, HSBC, NFU Mutual Risk Management Services, Sainsbury's,
Tesco and Waitrose. The Red Meat Industry Forum was set up in 2001
by Defra, NFU, IGD and MLC with the aim of improving competitiveness
and profitability in the livestock and red meat industry. Red
