Organic livestock farmers now have access to two market leading
feed supplements in a convenient “straight feed” form
following the acceptance of Yea-Sacc 1026 Farm
Pak and Mycosorb Farm Pak as products that are permitted for use
in organic farming systems.
Manufactured by global animal health company Alltech, both Yea-Sacc
and Mycosorb offer scope to enhance profitability in a wide range
of livestock enterprises and will be particularly effective in
improving performance in certain organic farming situations. Previously
permitted for use in their more concentrated form only – as
an integral part of a compound feed for example – both products
are now available to organic livestock farmers directly from the
Farm Pak bag.
Yea-Sacc 1026 is based on a specific strain of Saccharomyces
cerevisiae yeast and works by stimulating the activity of beneficial rumen bacteria
and stabilising the rumen environment. This produces improvements in dry matter
intakes and fibre digestion, resulting in production benefits in terms of milk
yield and growth rates.
Mycosorb will be of more specific interest to farmers with concerns
about mycotoxins contamination of their feedstuffs. It is based
on a patented yeast cell wall extract to which the commonly occurring
mycotoxins bind in the gut, rendering them harmless to the animal.
Both Yea-Sacc and Mycosorb are used widely in conventional livestock
farming systems in the UK and throughout the world.
