The competition is based on points gained for exhibitor-bred cattle at the
Royal Highland, Royal and Royal Welsh shows and, for the first time last year,
the new National Aberdeen-Angus Show held at Westmorland Show, plus a rota
of six regional shows which changes each year.
The qualifying shows for 2005 were Doune and Dunblane, Nairn and
Turriff in Scotland and Cheshire, Moreton-in-Marsh and South of
England in England.
As well as running the 70-cow Cardona herd, founded in 1993, Mr
Galloway is a director of the family company, Scotbeef Ltd, leading
suppliers of Aberdeen-Angus beef to Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's
and the Co-op from their Bridge of Allan processing plant.
The Cardona herd exhibited at only three of the qualifying shows
during the summer but accumulated enough points to wrest the top
award. The herd's successes included the reserve supreme
and female championships at the Royal Highland Show, reserve supreme
and reserve female championships at the National Aberdeen-Angus
Show and supreme and female championships at Doune and Dunblane,
with the eight year old cow, Cardona Edwina 7th, by Mushroom Friar
Fergus.
Cardona also won the male championship at the National Show with
the yearling bull, Cardona Edwin D263, by Tegsnose Karboy A040,
which was also male and reserve supreme champion at Perth Show.
Mr Galloway will be presented with the Walkers Shortbread Rosebowl
and a cash prize of £250 at the annual dinner of the Aberdeen-Angus
Cattle Society which is held during the Perth bull sales in February.
