ONE OF Northern Ireland’s leading demolition contractors
has taken delivery of the UK’s first JCB JS330 HRD excavator – and
put it straight to work on a project in the heart of Belfast. The JS330HRD has been developed in harness with demolition industry
experts and weighs in at nearly 40 tonnes and has a 21 metre reach.
The first machine to be sold in the UK has gone to Belfast-based
McCormack Demolition, a company with a demolition and deconstruction
pedigree stretching back more than 20 years.
Employing more than 30 people and a member of the National Federation
of Demolition Contractors, McCormack Demolition has put the JS330HRD – bought
from JCB’s dealer BC Plant - to work on demolishing part
of the Ross’s Mills site off the Falls Road in Belfast. The former three-storey linen mill is more than 100-years-old
and while part of the building is being retained and converted
into luxury loft-style apartments, other sections are being demolished
as part of the development. Following the demolition project at the Ross's Mills site, the
JS330HRD moved on to demolish the former Murrays tobacco factory
in Linfield Road, Belfast, where site clearance is still underway. Eamonn McCormack is McCormack Demolition’s Managing Director
and his sister Una McCormack is the company’s General Manager.
Una McCormack said: “We were searching the market for a high
reach demolition excavator and were aware that JCB had added one
to its range. We needed the machine almost immediately and availability
was excellent. “The machine has performed very well and our operator is
very pleased with it, particularly with the stability and the visibility
from the cab. Our experience of buying our first ever JCB machine
has been very positive and based on that, we would certainly consider
JCB when buying another demolition excavator.” Ken Bainbridge, UK and European Director, Demolition and Waste
Recycling, said: “Research shows that a significant number
of plant purchases made by demolition contractors are specialised
high reach demolition machines. By having a 21-metre high reach
demolition rig in the JCB range we have now become a primary supplier
to the demolition industry.” Designed and built by JCB Heavy Products, the rig comprises a
three-fold boom. It fits on to the standard JS330XD base unit and
is compatible with associated demolition attachments. The model
forms the spearhead of the JCB’s drive for a greater share
of the European market. The JS330 HRD is the flagship of JCB’s extensive range of
products sold to the demolition sector. Existing products include
mini excavators, backhoe loaders, telescopic handlers, skid steer
loaders, wheeled loading shovels and XD specification tracked excavators. Royal
