The Twyford herd of Simmental cattle owned by Tony and Phillida
Hurn of Calthorpe, Norfolk, has been recognised by EBLEX (English
Beef and Lamb Executive) and Farmers Guardian as the Most Improved
Herd of Simmentals 2006/07.
The award is presented by the EBLEX Beef Better Returns Programme
(Beef BRP) to the recorded herd* that shows the most impressive
improvement to its genetic merit over a 12 month period. There
is a separate award for each of eight UK breeds. Tony and Phillida
Hurn recently hosted a Beef BRP Better Breeding event highlighting
the best practice in use on farm and in the herd.
Phillida Hurn said: “I am delighted to have won this award
which shows that investing in a better bull has really done the
trick for our herd.
“Using EBVs as part of the mix when choosing a bull has resulted
in some great stock and excellent weight gains in our suckler herd
as well. It would be even better if more breeders were recording
to make sure we get the most accurate data possible.”
The award was presented at the Royal Show in July by EBLEX Beef
BRP Project Manager, Netta de la Cour, who said: “Using EBVs
in a commercial herd can improve returns by around £30 per
calf. Through this award we hope to highlight not only the excellent
progress made by breeders but also the opportunities available
to beef producers.”
Fiona Sloan, Breed Development and Promotions manager of the British
Simmental Cattle Society said: “I am delighted that the Twyford
Herd has won this award. Having visited the herd recently, I was
impressed by the quality of the stock and the development programme
instigated by the family in conjunction with the use of EBVs.
“I wish them continued success and look forward to visiting
the herd as part of our World Congress tour next year.”
