National Milk Laboratories (NML), a sister company of NMR, is
exhibiting at the Dairy Event, Stoneleigh, for the first time this
year (September 19/20). After a period of expansion, NML is now responsible for testing
85% of British milk production on behalf of milk buyers for payment
purposes. Both NML sites, at Wolverhampton and Paisley, also have
microbiology and disease testing laboratories offering services
to buyers, producers, vets and advisers.
NML is also sponsoring the new Farm Health Planning area at this
year’s Dairy Event; a major new exhibition specifically designed
to encourage farmers to introduce proactive measures to help manage
herd disease and improve their livestock’s overall performance.
NML, with BCVA, will participate in a programme of discussions
within this exhibition, focussing on the cost and control of herd
              health.

“NML holds fresh bulk milk samples from the majority of our
dairy herds,” says NML director Ben Bartlett. “One
a week is used for payment testing but spares are kept and can
be used, at the producer’s request, for any of the disease
              tests on offer.

“We will demonstrate this integrated facility to producers
at the Dairy Event and show just how easily routine or ad-hoc health
tests can be carried out. The real advantage is the cost-effectiveness
and timeliness of the services thanks to a milk sample being readily
              available.”

NML will also be promoting the availability of milk payment test
results – that includes milk quality and cell counts –on
line. These results are available immediately and, again, using
the samples in store, producers can opt for more regular tests
if results are out of line.

The main NMR stand will focus on developments in the integrated
recording and management services such as Herd Companion and InterHerd
used by producers, their vets and advisers. Many of the reports
have now been made available to all customers free of charge off
              the Herd Companion web site.

The NML stand is situated in the Farm Health Planning exhibition
on Area C, between the Cattle Sheds and Exhibition Hall 2. The
NMR stand is in Exhibition Hall 1.
