NFU Scotland is holding a promotional event in the Borders on
Friday 7 December, as part of its What’s on Your Plate? campaign,
to urge shoppers to buy Scottish turkeys for Christmas.
The festive branch of the campaign is following a 12 Days of Christmas
theme and farmers from around the country are getting out and about
prior to Christmas to promote 12 of the high quality Scottish food
and drink items that they help produce for Christmas meals, from
the customary turkey to a nip of whisky for Santa! The turkey event
will be the second of the 12 events around the country, with the
rest taking place between 8 and 21 December. The event, being held in Galashiels, will take place from 9am
until 3pm outside ASDA in the town. Shoppers will be able to meet
local farmers, learn more about the benefits associated with buying
local, Scottish produce and also have the chance to win a turkey,
worth over £50, in time for Christmas. Anna Davies, NFU Scotland Campaigns Manager, said: “It’s important for farmers to be able to get out
and about and meet shoppers to promote the excellent food and drink
that they are growing. At this time of year, our thoughts turn
to turkey and so we want to highlight to shoppers all the benefits
of buying Scottish turkeys for their Christmas dinner plates. “Not only are food miles reduced but buying local produce
also helps to sustain rural communities as well as local wildlife
and countryside. And of course it tastes great! “I would encourage everyone to come along and meet some
of their local farmers as well as have the chance of winning a
turkey in time for Christmas. “If you can’t make it along, please simply look out
for Scottish labels when you do your Christmas food shopping and
help to support locals farmers.” What’s on Your Plate? campaign details can
