The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 73 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 20 OTM cattle, 3,296 prime hoggs, 980 spring lambs and 4,266 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th June, 2008.
Prime cattle met a brisk trade for a poorer show of cattle, frequently selling from 160p to 175p. The Over Thirty Month cattle met a flying trade with beef cows very dear. The whole sale average was a high of 113.6p. Top price per kilo was 154.5p for a Limousin heifer from A Arthur, Johnstone Bank. Top price £1106.30 for a Limousin cow from Johnstone Bank, others to £903.60 Smallholms, £878.85 Upper Tinwasl, £733.65 Hightown; Friesian cows £964, £696.30 Stubbyknowe; Limousin heifers £1096.95, £1003.75 Johnstone Bank; Belgian Blues £880.75 Johnstone Bank; Angus £858.70 Burnfoot on Esk. The sale averaged £789.69.
A larger show of lambs were forward with recent high rates upheld and a quality show forward. The sale topped at £92.80 for Texels from Messrs Armstrong, Broomhills and to 202p for Texels from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot. A very mixed show of hoggs met a cautious trade with only the best fleshed hoggs easily sold. The sale averaged 114p overall.
