The first ever Signet Sire Summary for a whole breed for distribution to all its members has been made available to the Hampshire Down Sheep Breeders’ Association.
|
The document lists the top performance recorded sires within the breed and their accompanying Estimated Breeding Values, together with a listing of the leading ram lambs.
“The summary will enable all Hampshire Down breeders to use EBVs to make more informed breeding decisions and identify the leading bloodlines within the breed. The document can also be used by commercial producers to identify rams with the right balance of traits for their flocks,” comments Signet’s Sam Boon.
HDSBA’s Sally Horrell adds: “Genetic trends recently published by Signet indicate the impact that recording is having; not just in those flocks that record, but across the entire breed through the widespread dissemination of improved genetics. We’re pleased to witness continuing change is being achieved in commercially important traits, in particular growth rate and muscle depth, through the adoption of a progressive breeding strategy.”
