The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
86 prime cattle, 14 OTM cattle, 270 prime hoggs, 2,539 prime
lambs and 5,531 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown on Thursday 10th July, 2008.
The prime cattle saw the quality sorts maintaining late high
rates. Plainer sorts were cheaper. Top was 185.5p for a Charolais
heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn, others 162.5p Hallburn;
Limousin 168.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage, 167.5p Hallburn, 165.5p
Beckhall. Limousin bullocks from Messrs Taylor, Dashwellgreen
to 176.5p, 170.5p, 169.5p, others to 168.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage,
167.5p Hallburn. Belgian Blue 172.5p The Gill; Charolais 168.5p
Hallburn.
A small show of otm were in keeping with national trend with
all classes cheaper. Limousin cows to 125.5p Cocklet Hill; Black & Whites
105.5p Chapeltown; Blondes 103.5p Wysebyhill Cottage; Simmental
95.5p Cambeck Hill.
The cast ewes and rams attracted many buyers with all
classes still dear with the exception of overfat and lean hill
ewes.
The hoggs met a firm trade for the end of season goods and averaged
100p/kg to a top of £50 for Texels from Whitehope, £45.50

The prime lambs were a good show for quality and sold above
expectations to a full ring of buyers. The sale was topped at £72.50
for Suffolks from E A Dodd, Roanstree and for Texels from M/s
Sutherland, Carran and to 147.1p for Texels from Messrs Bell,
Greenknowe. Other Suffolks to £69.50 Wallend, £66.80
