A fourth supreme championship success was achieved by the Northumberland-based Flodden flock of Jonathon Hayward at the 34th annual Northern Counties of England Branch of the Suffolk Sheep Society’s pedigree show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Aug 2)

Mr Hayward, of East Learmouth, Cornhill-on-Tweed, landed top honours with his class-winning ram lamb and male champion, one of January-born triplets by the Bentley Bond-sired Hallhill Hudson, acquired for 2,000 guineas at Edinburgh last year.
Both the dam and grand dam were home-bred, the latter - by Strathisla Supreme Champion - winning supreme honours at the 2003 Border Suffolk Club Show and a half sister to the female champion at the Northumberland County Show in 2005.
Although the title winner, making its debut in the exhibition arena, remained unsold, Mr Hayward did find buyers for his first prize-winning pair of ram lambs, sold for 390 and 400 guineas respectively. Both were products of Flodden championship winners at the Border Suffolk Club and Northumberland County Shows.
The champion female and overall reserve supreme champion was another show debutante, the first prize-winning shearling ewe from North Yorkshire breeders Colin and Kathryn Milburn, of Low Moor Farm, Scagglethorpe, Malton.
The home-bred January, 2007, ewe, by the highly regarded Irish sire Glenho Sid, out of a Perrinpit Monarch dam, sold for 190 guineas to S Catermole, of Kirkham, Preston.
The Milburns’ Norton flock was also responsible for the first prize-winning ewe lamb and reserve female champion - another Glenho Sid daughter - which became the top-priced female when selling locally for 230 guineas to Jeremy Daggett, of Burnsall.
Joint top prices on the day at 600 guineas apiece were achieved by two entries from the Pexhill flock of Cheshire exhibitor Geoff Biddulph, of Dalehouse Farm, Gawsworth, Macclefield.
Both were by the prolific Stockton Sky’s The Limit, who has sired many prize winners, including male, female and inter-breed champions at the Royal Show, along with the top-priced lamb at this year’s National Show at 15,000 guineas.
The first was an April, 2007, shearling ram sold to RS Kitson & Son, of Asenby, Thirsk, the second a ram lamb and full brother to the first prize ewe lamb, female and reserve champion at the 2007 Royal Show. It was bought by Suffolk breeders Mr and Mrs Lester Peel, of Greystone Farm, Over Silton, Thirsk.
Derbyshire breeders Steven and Louise Buckley, of Sittinglow Farm, Dove Holes, Buxton, show champions in both 2006 and 2007, sold their second prize ram lamb, the dam is a full sister to last year’s Skipton title winner, to another local buyer, Richard Close, of Starbottom, for 470 guineas.
The Buckleys’ Sitlow flock also presented the first prize untrimmed ram lamb and reserve male champion. The youngster, by the Irish National 2007 supreme champion Baileys Irish National, was acquired for 480 guineas by FA Broadwith, of Thornton Watlass, Ripon.
Show judge was Janice Broughton, of Melton Constable, Norfolk, a well-known and prolific winner in the Suffolk show world for some 30 years. She said: “Both the champion and reserve champion exhibited breed correctness, conformation and style.”
While entry numbers were down due to continuing Bluetongue restrictions, the fixture represented an improvement on last year, when, although the show went ahead as normal, the sale scheduled for the following day was a victim of the foot and mouth outbreak.
Prices: Shearling ewes sold to 190gns (av £160), ewe lambs to 230gns (£205), shearling rams to 600gns (£342), ram lambs to 600gns (£385).
