A record total of 83 trophies and £16,000 in prize money, including £6,500 in the traditional cattle and sheep classes, are on offer at this year’s event on Tuesday, September 1.
Livestock entries close on Tuesday, August 18. In the strong sheep section, an overall supreme champion will emerge from the 111 classes – for Dalesbred, Swaledale, Teeswater, Masham, Blue Faced Leicester, Mule, Suffolk, Texel, Beltex, Jacob, Derbyshire Gritstone and Lonk sheep breeds, along with prime lambs.
In the robust 51-class cattle division, the dairy section features open pedigree and Jersey classes, with commercial beef cattle also well catered for. Supreme champions will be crowned in both. Pedigree beef classes cover Limousin, Highland, Belgian (British) Blue and any other pure breeds, culminating in both supreme interbreed and native breed championships.
Horses are a highlight at Kilnsey and entries in the 22 equine classes need to be in by August 22. They cover Shires, ridden horses, local riding, Dales ponies, mountain and moorland, and an open competition for working hunters. Entries for the action-packed harness races close of Friday, August 21.
There is an August 22 deadline for all other classes, with sections of interest for all-comers, adults and children alike, both local and open.
They cover wines, bread and cakes, preserves, children’s baking, children’s and adult handicrafts, photography, art, horticulture – flowers, vegetables and fruit – and flower arranging, a total of 121 categories in all.
The popular sheep dog trials competition features three classes, including one for young handlers, while there are competitive classes covering walking stick making, tractor handling, vintage tractors, dry stone walling, farm crops and young farmers’ sheep judging.
The highlight of Kilnsey Sports is the famous open crag race – one of the most demanding tests in the country for fell runners, with two supporting crag races for juniors.
